Scotland’s national league champions face a tough challenge against a club who boast nine European titles on their honours roster and a host of German internationals within their ranks.
As a result, Mark Ralph’s side will need to pull out the stops to progress to a quarter-final tie against further German opposition in the form of Rott-Weiss Koln or Royal Leopold HC of Belgium. The quarter-finals are scheduled for 31 March/1 April.
Uhlenhorst Mülheim are competing in their second successive EHL competition, having been eliminated in Round 2 at the hands of Dutch giants H.C. Rotterdam last year, and are aiming to go at least one round better this time around.
Players to watch include striker Thilo Stralkowski and fellow international team-mate Jan Philipp Rabente, who scored both goals in Germany’s 2-1 victory over the Netherlands in last year’s Olympic Gold Medal match in London.
The Germans will start Friday’s tie as favourites but anything can happen in knock-out hockey and Kelburne will travel in the hope that an upset can be delivered in Amsterdam this week.
Glynhill Hotel Kelburne squad: Mark Fulton (captain), Mark Ralph, William Marshall, Adam Bain, Ian Horsfield, Chris Nelson, Michael Bremner, Ross McIntyre, Michael Christie, Johnny Christie, Gareth Hall, Alan Forsyth, Jack McAllister, Ed Greaves, Lee Morton, David Forsyth
All the last 16 and quarter-final ties will be shown live on the EHL website this weekend, providing a feast of top club continental action.
