Kelburne aiming to secure Division 1 title

Glynhill Hotel Kelburne can claim their ninth championship in a row this weekend if they can defeat challengers Grove Menzieshill and Grange in a mouth-watering double header in the Aberdeen Asset Management Division 1.
Six points for Mark Ralph’s side would clinch the crown, but they face two tricky ties. On Saturday, they are away to Grove Menzieshill at DISC (14.30), before travelling to Edinburgh on Sunday to take on Grange at Peffermill.
Looking forward to a pivotal weekend’s hockey, player-coach Ralph said, “At this point of the season, results are what matters. We will be looking to get maximum points and we know our toughest game will be against Grange after the game earlier in the season ended in a 3-3 draw. First and foremost we are focused on Menzieshill; they have improved a lot this season and we will give them our full attention.”
For Grove Menzieshill, winning the title is mathematically possible, but remains a long shot when all the potential results and top of the table permutations are considered. The second European spot may well be a more realistic target. They also play PSL Team Sport Clydesdale at DISC on Sunday.
When asked about the possibilities of back to back wins at the weekend, Head Coach Chris Anderson replied, “The boys are looking forward to playing Kelburne. We will need to be at our very best to win against them, but it is possible. We will approach the game against Clydesdale differently but will treat them with the same respect as we will Kelburne.”
Grange, meanwhile, will be watching Saturday’s results with keen interest, but knowing that they have to beat Kelburne on Sunday to have any chance of winning the league. Even then, other results need to go their way.
Head Coach Colin Clarke said, “The destination of the league title is firmly in Kelburne’s hands, they have won it eight years in a row. All we are focusing on is Sunday’s game and if it is a game to win the league we will treat it the same as any other game and focus on our processes. The result will take care of itself.”
Elsewhere, Western Wildcats will be looking to get back to winning ways after losing their last two games. They face John McKnight’s PSL Team Sport Clydesdale on Saturday at Auchenhowie (13.30), who will be looking to leap frog them into fourth place. The Wildcats will then host AAM Gordonians on Sunday (Auchenhowie, 15.00) in a re-arranged fixture.
At the foot of the table, AAM Gordonians have been in good form lately by winning their last two games against Inverleith and Hillhead. If they can beat Watsonians away at Forrester High School (13.00), not only will they improve their chances of avoiding the play-offs, they will consign their opponents to Division 2 next season.
AMN Hillhead take on Inverleith (Sat, 14.25, Jordanhill School) and Watsonians (Sun, 13.00, Forrester Park School) in crucial encounters that will determine whether they finish in the play-off spot.
On Saturday, Highland face a tough test away to Falkirk GHG (14.15, Falkirk HS) knowing that a loss could leave them marooned at the bottom of Aberdeen Asset Management National League Division 2 with only three matches left. The home side have promotion on their mind however, and a win could edge them a step closer to a play-off contest.
Aberdeen GSFP will be aiming to continue their winning streak of four in a row by beating McWhinney Uddingston for a second time this season and overhauling them in the table to move into third spot. The sides meet on Saturday at Holy Cross School (12.15).
Alpha Data Carnegie and Stepps HC go head to head at HMS Caledonia (14.30) where a win for either side would substantially reduce any lingering relegation fears.
On Sunday, CALA Edinburgh travel to Granite City Wanderers (15.00, Aberdeen Sports Village) with a win paramount in their battle to escape the drop. Dundee University and Glasgow University face off against each other at Riverside Park (13.30).
The battle for the title and promotion places in Aberdeen Asset Management National League Division 3 is getting intense with the top five sides all within seven points of each other.
League leaders Erskine Stewart’s Melville may have the slightly easier tie of the day when they host seventh place Giffnock at Inverleith Playing Fields (17.00). Harris Academy can keep the pressure on the leaders with a win against Aberdeen University (11.30, DISC), while third plays fifth when FMGM Monarchs take on Perthshire (13.00, DISC).
Elsewhere, Waverley Inveresk Trinity travel to 2020 Renewables Greenock, Strathclyde University host Stirling Wanderers and Chapman Motherwell play Stirling University at home.
