Junior Scots fight back to hold England to a draw
Scotland U21 Men came back from two goals down to draw with England in the first of two international matches at Lilleshall last night.
The Scots fielded a young side, including first appearances at U21 level for Phillip Bryans, Elliot Sandison, Fabian Goldie, and Jock Breckenridge.
The players held their own through the first two quarters and matched everything that came their way from the hosts, taking them into half time at 0 – 0.
England came our strong in the third quarter scoring two goals in the 40th and 46th minute to give them the lead, both goals coming from open play.
The Scottish corner defence was solid, applying what they had practiced in the morning and with James Carrie pulling off some excellent saves. This forced England to try some options which again the Scots kept out with Jock Breckenridge standing in the way of the slip.
Early in the third quarter the ex-Kelburne forward pairing of Ed Greaves and Jack McKenzie linked up, running right through the English defence. On the run, Greaves played a perfect through ball to McKenzie who rounded the final defender bouncing the ball and smashed it past the keeper bringing the Scots back into the match at 2-1.
With one minute to go Fergus Sandison picked the ball up in a crowdedcircle and with some close skill managed to win a corner on the 69th minute.
Scotland worked an option off the top slipping the ball left to U21 GB Internationalist Hamish Imrie who flicked the ball into the side netting to secure the draw for the team.
