Inverleith target second spot

The last round of Subway National League fixtures take place
this weekend before the outdoor season goes into hibernation with
the Indoor League season beginning in the first weekend in
December.

Greaves Clydesdale meet an Inverleith team, looking to make up
for last week’s inactivity, in an attractive looking fixture with
Gordon Shepherd “not sure what level of performance the team will
produce from one game to the next.” It has been a disappointing
season for the men from Titwood with on paper the squad
strengthened but inconsistency the problem. Shepherd summed it up
by saying “it is all about attitude as the pool talent cannot be
questioned.”

Inverleith coach Stevie McCurry’s view is that “Clydesdale are a
good side, well coached and yet to find form this season.” The
Edinburgh club have all their players fit and available this
Saturday after suffering with recent absences. McCurry had set a
target at the start of the season to compete at the top end of the
league and so far his team have achieved this aim.

However the coach added “We are only half way through the season
and we and the rest of the league are not quite at the level of
Kelburne.” Inverleith and Hillhead were left frustrated with the
cancellation of last week’s meeting and McCurry finished by saying
“This rearranged fixture may also have to be a midweek game as both
clubs are still in the Scottish Cup.

The break is a source of great disappointment to Western
Wildcats coach Vishal Marwaha who reflected “to be honest the
winter shut down is coming at the wrong time for us as we have been
on a great run.”  The Wildcats experienced a difficult start
to the season for reasons well known but a win on Saturday would
leave them handily placed going into the break.

CALA have shown their ability to cope with the demands at the
top level and are dangerous opponents for any team. However the
Edinburgh side lost the first encounter 4-2 and will be keen to
reverse that result which would then leave them comfortably placed
in mid table spot.

Marwaha’s team will be missing the injured Joe Simpson but he
finished by saying “however Andrew Sewnauth is progressing well
after his return last weekend after long term injury” which is a
huge bonus for the Glasgow club.

The Wildcats are also in Arthur McKay Scottish Cup action on
Sunday when they travel to face Ayr (15.00) in a re-arranged last
sixteen tie.

AMN Hillhead travel facing the most daunting task of the day
which is how to deal with the pace, power and undoubted class of a
rampant free scoring Glynhill Hotel Kelburne team who despite the
loss of influential players continue to dominate the domestic
scene.
However Harry Coles cautioned “I think it is very much about
approaching games with the correct attitude.”

Keith Joss’s team proved stubborn opponents the last time the
sides met and Coles believes ” Hillhead have been playing some
decent hockey without much return.” A view held by many observers
but Hillhead are coming off a run of three successive league
defeats and it would be a huge bonus if they could end that run on
Saturday.

VWS Dundee Wanderers only point to date was gained against this
weekend’s visitors, Edinburgh University, when they fought out a
scoreless draw. However Wanderers have displayed concerning
defensive frailties since that game and if they are to have any
chance of moving out of the relegation place, solutions will have
to be found.

Graham Moodie will be looking for his side to respond positively
to a rare defeat this season when they went down to an inform
Wildcats team. Moodie will be keen to secure the points which would
ensure that the students would go into the winter break sitting in
the top half of the table.

Second placed Grange were due to travel to Tayside to meet Grove
Menzieshill. However work has now begun to lay the new pitch at
DISC and the game has been cancelled and re-scheduled for 19th
February next year.
