Inverleith humble Danes
EUROPEAN INDOOR CLUB TROPHY FRIDAY 17
FEBRUARY TO SUNDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2012 AT ENGAGE SPORTS CENTRE
AT NAPIER UNIVERSITY IN EDINBURGH
Inverleith remained on course for a promotion spot with a
comfortable 5-2 victory over Danish side Slagelse in their third
pool match at the European Indoor Club Trophy in Edinburgh, a
result that consolidates their second spot in the pool behind
French side Lille.
The Inverleith cause was earlier aided with third placed
Kolos-Sekvoia Vinnitsa from Ukraine losing 7-5 to Belgian side
Racing Club Bruxelles, thus opening up a four point cushion for
Stuart Neave`s charges.
The ever-alert Derek Salmond had the ball in the net in only
three minutes but the “goal” was correctly disallowed by the
umpire. The same player did score five minutes later, he
picked up the ball from outside his own circle, went on a solo run
and lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. Graham
Moodie and Stephen Dick dictated play for Inverleith, but there
were no further goals in a rather uninspiring first half, although
a late Salmond “goal” was again disallowed.
Inverleith opened out in the second period and in four minutes a
penetrating run down the right by Dick created the opening, his
square pass was lashed home by Salmond for Inverleith`s
second. Some alarm bells were heard when Mikkel Christensen
pulled one back for the Danes from the spot.
It only served to inspire the Scots to greater efforts and Dick
was unlucky not to score on two occasions. But the
restoration of the two goal lead was only delayed, Dick`s shot at
Inverleith`s first penalty corner was illegally saved on the line
by a defender and up stepped Chris Duncan to coolly slot the ball
past the keeper.
The result was virtually sealed when John Harris received a pass
from Adam MacKenzie and fired a low shot home from a narrow angle.
With Slagelse down to five players, Inverleith went into a 5-1
lead, Callum Duke pushed his way into the Danish circle and sent a
rocket into the roof of the net.
Mick Sorensen scored a late consolation for Slagelse when
Inverleith were reduced to five players with Duncan sent to the sin
bin for the remainder of the contest.
After the game, Inverleith coach Stuart Neave said: “I`m
very happy with the result, we put in a good disciplined
