Inverleith aiming to steal a march on rivals Western Wildcats
The only match in the Women’s Aberdeen Asset Management National League Division 1 on Saturday has significant implications for the relegation battle at the foot of the table.
Inverleith Ladies take on Western Wildcats at Edinburgh Academy (15.30), where a win for the Edinburgh side over their Glasgow rivals would boost their chances of avoiding the drop and bring both Glynhill Hotel Kelburne and Grange EL into the relegation scrap. However, the Wildcats will be keen to keep pace with the teams near the bottom with an away win.
With the remaining sides in the top division on a break due to Scotland Women’s participation in the FIH World League 2 in Brazil, attention turns to the crucial matches being played in both Divisions 2 & 3 of the Women’s Aberdeen Asset Management National League.
GHK Ladies will be aiming to keep setting the pace at the top of Division 2 when they play city rivals Glasgow University on Saturday (15.00, Anniesland). The home side comfortably defeated the students 6-0 earlier in the season and a similar result will ensure they retain their place at the top of the division.
Meanwhile, second place Watsonians face a tricky encounter at home to Erskine Stewart’s Melville FP (14.30, Mary Erskine School), where a win for either side will keep them right in the title and promotion hunt.
Granite City Wanderers can also stay in touch with the close bunch of teams at the top of the league with an away win over Hillhead Ladies (14.10, Jordanhill School).
At the bottom of the league, Waverley Inveresk Trinity will need a win against Highland (12.30, Bangholm) to help their chances of trying to stay in the division, although Haddington Ladies will be aiming to keep the points difference in tact when they play away to Borders Fjordhus Rievers (14.00, Tweedbank)
In Division 3, AAM Merlins Gordonians still lead the way by ten points from second place Stirling University and will be confident of beating city rivals Aberdeen University at home on Saturday (12.30, Countesswells).
Dundee University could leapfrog Stirling University into second place if they can win their matches against Bon Accord MBC (Saturday, 13.30, Cults Academy) and St. Andrew’s University (Sunday).
Ayr will need to take maximum points from their home match against Aberdeen Ladies (15.00, Cambusdoon) if they are to catch up with the pack near the bottom of the table. Strathclyde University will have similar objective in mind when they play St.Andrew’s University at home (12.30, Millerston)
