Hockey’s Investec London Cup gives British public chance to see top talent on home turf
Great Britain Hockey is delighted to announce that
following the Great Britain women’s hockey team’s outstanding
silver medal success at the recent Champions Trophy, the team will
be the hosts of the 2012 Investec London Cup from 5-10 June
2012.
Just seven weeks before the Olympic Games, the glamour and
excitement of world class international hockey will arrive in West
London. Among the array of talent set to take on GB will be
Olympic Champions the Netherlands, world number three Germany and
Commonwealth gold medallists Australia. South Africa, the
African Champions, and Ireland, both of whom are competing in
Olympic qualifying tournaments in the next month, make up the six
team tournament.
Fans will get an early opportunity to see Britain’s Olympic
hopefuls in action against their biggest rivals at the University
of Westminster’s Sports Ground in Chiswick. Four of the teams
– Great Britain, Netherlands, Germany and Australia – are already
assured of their places in the Olympic tournament, guaranteeing
some of the world’s best athletes will be on show.
Announcing the tournament, Sally Munday, Chief Operating
Officer of Great Britain Hockey, said:
“The Investec London Cup is a jewel in the crown for hockey in
this country. It forms a key part of our Hockey Nation
programme, as we look to inspire people on the back of the good
feeling that surrounds the London Olympics. The demand for
tickets for the Olympic Games has shown how excited about watching
live sport the British public is. With six of the best teams
in the world on show, plus opportunities to pick up a hockey stick
and try it for yourself, we certainly expect the Investec London
Cup to capture the spirit of the nation.”
Raymond van Niekerk, Investec, said:
“The Investec London Cup is part of an incredible summer of
sport and gives us the opportunity to see the GB women’s hockey
team battle it out with some of the best teams in the world, just
weeks before the Olympic Games begin. We will also see the
Investec South African women’s hockey team take on Investec
sponsored Great Britain – a very proud moment for us!”
Talking about the tremendous support that her team can expect to
receive, Great Britain hockey captain Kate Walsh
said,
“The excitement of 2012 is definitely starting to grow.
Half a million people watched us on TV as we won the silver
medal at the Champions Trophy recently, which was brilliant!
We get a real buzz playing in front of a home crowd so it’s great
that the Investec London Cup is going to give people the chance to
come down to Chiswick, see us in the flesh and get behind the
team.”
Ticket prices for the Investec London Cup will start at
just £1 for U18s and £10 for adults. Tickets cover an
entire day’s action, with a minimum of two matches plus access to
the hockey fun zone and much more.
A range of hospitality packages will go on sale shortly.
