Hockey shines at Dundee Awards
Hockey was once again a big winner at the Dundee Sports Award on 21st February with awards recognising the strength of the sport in the city, both in performance and development.
The awards ceremony took place at Caird Hall as part of a celebration of sport that included a gymnastics display, London 2012 Torch Bearers, music and dance.
The big winners for hockey this year were Grove Menzieshill HC, taking both the Team of the Year for their Ladies 1st Team and Club of the Year.
This is the second year in a row that hockey has taken the Team of the Year, with Dundee Wanderers Ladies 1st Team taking the award last year.
Grove Menzieshill’s Club of the Year award this year is a reflection that, as well as the performance element, the club has been working hard to develop their youth section through linking to local schools and that work continues with a youth festival on 20th April.
Grove Menzieshill HC were also a beneficiary of the Coach of the Year award, which went to Charlotte Jones for her work with their Ladies teams. Charlotte was unable to attend the awards dinner as she was preparing to fly out to Switzerland to continue her coaching at the EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy.
The club’s association with the awards continued with Maureen Golden winning the Lifetime Commitment Award for her years of work in the sport.
Congratulations to Charlotte, Maureen and Grove Menzieshill on their awards. With its mix of experienced, quality coaches and youthful enthusiasm, the club is certainly in safe hands to progress.
