Hillhead join Clydesdale Western, Watsonians and Wildcats in the top four
The day at DISC opened with a big result; Hillhead`s 4-2 defeat of Dundee Wanderers. The result pushed Hillhead up to third in the table, above Wanderers and level with Wildcats – but would that last?
The omens were evident in the first half when the Glasgow side were two up through Rachel Osborne and Teresa Fernandez. Although Amy Snell pulled one back in the second half further strikes by Rebecca Osborne and Lucy Langlands pushed the score up to 4-1 before a Sam Sangster penalty corner pulled one back. But there was no further scoring and the score stood at 4-2 to Hillhead.
And now to the big one – Watsonians v Clydesdale Western. Both sides were without their international players – that perhaps may have made a difference. Far from a goal feast, the score remained blank until the 31st minute when Clydesdale`s Ava Graham found the net. Then up stepped Ciara Forgie to notch a quick-fire double and bring Clydesdale`s tally to three. Watsonians` Katie Crawford scored in the dying seconds to pull one back but Clydesdale`s victory was already secured.
So first blood to Clydesdale in this indoor season and they top the division, but the most crucial matches are still to come.
Grange recorded their first win of this indoor season after seeing off Uddingston 4-1, and thereby moving off the bottom spot. Iona Syme and Emily Norris put the Edinburgh side two up at the interval while Freda Philip and Emma Davie from the spot doubled their tally before a consolation counter from Maisy Dacre.
Perhaps rather predictably Hillhead`s day in the sun came to an abrupt end with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Clydesdale. Lucy Williamson, Kayleigh Justice and Fiona Semple put the league leaders three up at the break. Clydesdale added two more in the second half through Margery Justice and another set piece from Williamson.
The Wildcats v Dundee Wanderers contest was a hugely important occasion for a top four place…and it was the Cats who clawed the three points leaving Wanderers in the lower echelons. And the result was as close as the occasion – 4-3.
That was not how the match opened, in the first minute Amy Snelle put the Taysiders into an early lead. But it did not survive the course of time, Olivia Finch and Kate Holmes put the Cats` noses in front at the break. Cats` Lexi Macmillan made it 3-1 only for Lucie Johnston to reduce the deficit to one again. It was left to Finch to provide the killer blow for the Cats, although Snelle did get a late consolation at a penalty corner.
Watsonians returned to winning ways with a 5-1 win over Grange in the final league format encounter. Sarah McKay, Ailsa Small and Anna Logan at a penalty corner gave the current champions a 3-0 half-time lead. Freda Philip pulled one back for Grange but further strikes from Tabitha Peck and Small again provided Watsonians with a comfortable victory.
Hillhead have made a remarkable effort to make the top four competition, but in the final additional match they went down 4-3 to Wildcats who thereby consolidated their third place spot.
It all looked very promising for Hillhead when they lead the Cats 2-1 at the interval, Teresa Fernandez and Lucy Langlands scored just before the break after Jennifer Veitch had opened for the Cats. Seven minutes into the second half Mhairi McGregor levelled and Kate Holmes put the Auchenhowie side 3-2 ahead, A draw looked on the cards when Rachel Osborne made it three each at a penalty corner but the coup de grace came from the Cats` Lexi Macmillan to secure the victory, and end the day.
