Hill make the point
Grove Menzieshill took a huge stride towards recovering
their lost Subway indoor national league title by seeing off
current champions Inverleith 2-1 in a close encounter at Bell`s
Sports Centre in Perth. In eight minutes Michael Ross
gave the Taysiders the lead from the spot, only for Chris Duncan to
equalise for the Edinburgh side by the same manner.
The winning goal came three minutes into the second half, a good
build up by the Dundonians fed the fall to Chris Wilson and he used
his individual skills to make the opening and slide the ball
home.
In their opening fixture five goals from Josh Cairns was the
foundation of Menzieshill`s eleven goal victory over Greaves
Clydesdale. Cairns notched four in the first half as the
Taysiders were six up, Ross McPherson got the other
two. The avalanche continued after the interval, Cairns
scored again, McPherson got his hat-trick and the others came from
Gavin Byers and Chris Wilson.
In contrast, Inverleith struggled to overcome their Edinburgh
rivals Grange and emerged with a fortunate 5-4 victory at the
end. Inverleith looked to have the game won by the break,
Adam MacKenzie, Andrew Malcolm and John Harris provided a three
goal lead.
Derek Salmond made it 4-0 a minute into the second half, but two
set piece strikes from Gary Cameron brought Grange back into the
contest. With six minutes left Malcolm gave Inverleith a 5-2
lead, but that was the signal for Grange fightback, strikes from
Phil Sully and Cameron again brought the contest to a single goal
margin. But several wasted penalty corners and a miss from
the spot by Cameron proved fatal for Grange as a relieved
Inverleith finally took the three points.
Grange recovered their composure in their second match to beat
Clydesdale 6-3 with doubles from Cammie Fraser and Gary Cameron,
Hamish Imrie and Phil Sully got the others.
Western Wildcats tore into newly promoted CALA Edinburgh in
their first fixture in the top flight and finished with a
comfortable 9-3 win. Wildcats were 3-1 up at the interval,
Douglas Simpson, Scott McCartney and Steven Percy did the damage
with Scott Sutherland pulling one back from the spot. CALA`s
limited squad eventually told as the Wildcats continued to score,
Joe Simpson (2), Percy, Douglas Simpson and McCartney again and Ian
Moodie got the goals with a double from Richard McCorkell proved a
consolation for the Edinburgh side.
The Wildcats then proceeded to throw away a two goal lead to
fall 4-2 to VWS Dundee Wanderers in their second match.
Simpson and McCartney seemed to have give the Wildcats a solid
opening foundation, but veteran striker Paul Dailly pulled one back
just on the interval. The second half belonged to the
Dundonians, Fergus Sandison equalised with a solo goal, then Frank
Mulgrew and Rury Taylor secured the three points with a double in
the final three minutes.
Glynhill Kelburne emerged as the other side with full points
from the opening day`s events, a late strike by Iain Scholefield
gave the Paisley outfit a narrow 8-7 victory over VWS Dundee
Wanderers. A hat-trick by Gareth Hall and two from Willie
Marshall was the foundation of Kelburne`s win while three goals by
veteran striker Paul Dailly was Wanderers` main reply.
Kelburne went on to defeat CALA Edinburgh 10-0, teenager Lee
Morton scored four, Hall notched another hat-trick and Michael
Bremner scored twice.
