Grove still in control
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (WOMEN)
In the game of the day in the Subway national league,
Grove Menzieshill took a giant stride towards retaining the
championship with a 2-1 win over Giffnock. Grove are
still on course for another title, they lead Western by four
points, but have played a game more.
International striker Ali Bell gave Grove the lead but that was
pegged back by Giffnock`s Heather Lang for a 1-1 score at the
interval. Grove dominated the second half, they had
five penalty corners but to no effect. As the game
seemed to be drifting to a share of the points, Grove were awarded
a penalty corner with four minutes remaining, Louise Carroll`s
initial shot was blocked by the Giffnock keeper but the same player
followed up with a fierce reverse stick shot into the roof of the
net for the winner.
A hat-trick by international striker Holly Cram was the catalyst
in Milne Craig Western`s comfortable 6-0 victory over CALA
Edinburgh, and the Titwood outfit now slip into second spot over
Giffnock with two outstanding games till to play. Poor
defending donated Cram her first goal in only four minutes, and by
the interval the Glasgow side had advanced to 3-0, Catriona Ralph
found the net in off a defender`s stick and Morag McLellan made it
three after good work down the left by Fiona Bruce.
Bruce scored herself just after the interval, Ralph`s penalty
corner strike was deftly deflected high into the net by the Titwood
youngster. Cram then dispossessed a CALA defender and fired a
fierce drive past the keeper for 5-0. With ten minutes to go
a flowing move resulted in Nicki Skrastin`s initial shot being
blocked and Cram followed to net the rebound.
Edinburgh University remain in fourth spot after beating Grange
4-1, Sam Judge (2), Camilla Lyttle and Laura Protheroe were on
target for the students.
A goal five minutes from time by Rachael Osborne gave Dundee
Wanderers a narrow 2-1 win over Western Wildcats. After a
goalless first half it was the Wildcats who went ahead but a
penalty corner strike from Amy Rowan brought the scores level.
In the final game Glynhill Kelburne beat bottom side GHK
2-0.
