Grove play on to the end

SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (WOMEN)

Last gasp goals seemed to have become part of the agenda
for Grove Menzieshill recently, but they have allowed the Taysiders
to hang on to pole position in the women`s Subway national league,
but now only a single point ahead of Milne Craig
Western.

A Louise Carroll penalty corner with four minutes left gave the
champions a 2-1 win over Giffnock, and last weekend Ailsa Wyllie
notched the winner against Edinburgh University with only two
seconds remaining on the clock.

“As a team we remain focused on our results and play so we don`t
have to rely on other teams` performances or reflect on their
impact,” said Wyllie, Grove`s captain.  “The last two games
have been good challenging matches – the results have favoured us,
but we play the full 70 minutes of the game and believe in
ourselves until the final whistle in every match we play.”

Many pundits would see this weekend`s local derby against VWS
Dundee Wanderers as the last chance for Grove to drop crucial
points, especially as earlier in the season the teams fought out a
2-2 draw.  Amy Rowan found the net twice for Wanderers, while
Grove`s goals came from Kerry Hall and Ali Bell.

Wyllie disagrees:  “No, until the league has concluded we
don`t see it that way – every game has to be approached with the
right mindset, and to let your guard down after the Wanderers` game
would be wrong for us to do as players and as a team.”

There will certainly be no slacking in the Grove camp for the
Wanderers` clash.  “As always we will be going out to win with
a strong game play to support this, we would be disappointed with
any other result,” said Wyllie.

As always, the Tayside derby should be a competitive contest,
but if Grove can take the three points, Wyllie could start
polishing the crown, despite her notes of caution.  It is
unlikely that the subsequent visits of Western Wildcats and
Glynhill Kelburne in Grove`s final two fixtures are going to upset
the Dundonians` drive for their sixth consecutive
championship.   (Kilgraston School at 16.00)

Western can only sit back and hope for a miracle, but in the
meantime make sure that keep up the pressure by beating Wildcats at
Auchenhowie.   Last time out Western won 5-1,
internationalists Catriona Ralph and Holly Cram did the scoring.

If the bottom two sides are going to climb to safety this
weekend is the time to start, GHK are at home to CALA
Edinburgh  (Old Anniesland at 15.00) while Grange, a point
better off, take on Kelburne.   (Peffermill at 13.15)
