Grove Menzieshill six points clear after win over title rivals
As the showcase match at Scottish Hockey’s ‘Awesome October’, Grove Menzieshill recorded a vital 3-1 win over title rivals Milne Craig Clydesdale Western to maintain their 100% record at the top of Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s National League Division 1.
Strikes from captain Louise Carroll and Scotland internationals Leigh Fawcett and Ali Bell gave the Dundee side three important points for the trip back to Tayside. Holly Cram was the goalscorer for the Titwood outfit.
After the game, Grove Menzieshill skipper Louise Carroll said, “I thought it was a really good contest. Both teams have lost players and for us, it’s good to get the young players in the first eleven and give them that experience. Today was a great result.”

The defending champions broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Carroll rattled a low drive past Milne Craig Clydesdale Western ‘keeper Louise Duffy into the bottom left hand corner for a 1-0 lead.
Grove Menzieshill doubled their lead five minutes later when Leigh Fawcett’s reverse stick shot nestled in the bottom right hand corner of the goal to give her side a 2-0 cushion
Trailing by two goals at half-time, the Glasgow side were under pressure to get the next goal and Scotland striker Holly Cram dually delivered in the 56th minute when she swept the ball home at the back post following a penalty corner set-play.

With an important win over their close title rivals, Charlotte Jones’ charges now sit six points ahead at the top of the table.
The fourth and final match of day one at ‘Awesome October’ did not disappoint, when GHK and Glynhill Kelburne played an end to end pressured match resulting in the young Kelburne team taking a vital 2-1 win.

GHK started stronger than the Paisley based team, having a lot of play in Kelburne’s half. However the away side took their chance from a penalty corner in the 26th minute when Laura Carlton slotted in the first goal of the match.
It was very even play thereafter but Kelburne got their second on the stroke of half time from Frances McKeown.
As the rain started to pour in the second half the tables turned, and GHK began to find a good momentum and had multiple penalty corners. In the 65th minute they were rewarded for their hard work with a penalty corner resulting in their first goal from Hannah Clarke, tapping in the rebound on the far post.
Both teams played out of their skins for the last twenty minutes, with multiple shots on target but non could find the finish they needed. Great finish to a great first day at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
Elsewhere, Dundee Wanderers moved into joint second position with a 5-0 home win over Grange EL. Watsonians climbed the table with a 4-3 defeat of Western Wildcats. Edinburgh University are in second after a 2-1 victory over CALA Edinburgh.
