Grove Menzieshill pip Inverleith to Division 1 title
Grove Menzieshill pipped arch-rivals Inverleith by a single point to retain their National Indoor League Division 1 title at an extraordinary final session at Bell’s Sports Centre, Perth this afternoon.
Both sides recorded routine wins in their opening matches; the Dundee side beating Glynhill Hotel Kelburne (7-0) and Inverleith easily defeating Harris Academy FP (12-0).
In their second match, Chris Anderson’s side put the pressure back on the Purple Robes with a comfortable 4-2 win over city rivals Dundee Wanderers and the pressure told, with Inverleith being held to a 3-3 draw by Grange.
With only a point in the title race, it came down to final match shoot-out, with Grove Menzieshill snatching that all important point against Stuart Neave’s charges in a 4-4 draw to finish top of the table.
As it stands, Grange and Dundee Wanderers will join the top two in the European play-offs at the Indoor Gala Day at Bell’s Sports Centre on Saturday 9 February, following their respective third and fourth place finishes.
Wanderers defeated Western Wildcats (5-2) but lost out to Grange (4-3) and Grove Menzieshill. Grange also beat PSL Team Sport Clydesdale (6-3), whose relegation was confirmed today despite an 8-5 win over Harris Academy FP. Finally, Western Wildcats and Glynhill Hotel Kelburne played out a 5-5 draw.
National Indoor League Division 3
FMGM Monarchs lead the way in Division 3 following wins over Quasar (6-2), Kelburne II (5-2) and Dundee Wanderers II (7-3).
The Taysiders are two points clear of second place McWhinney Uddingston, who posted emphatic wins over Dundee Wanderers II (10-3) and Kelburne II (9-0).
At the bottom, Granite City Wanderers are rooted to the foot of the division after losses to Watsonians (6-8) and Dundee Wanderers II (3-7).
Elsewhere, Olympic Garscadden beat Kelburne II (5-1), but lost to Quasar (3-7). Quasar scooped a second win of the day with a victory over Watsonians (5-1).
National Indoor League Midland & North Division
Perthshire are still favourites for the Midland & North title despite being held to a 2-2 draw by AAM Gordonians II.
They bounced back to form with a 12-1 win over Dundee Wanderers III, who are resigned to being bottom of the table come the end of the season after defeats by Granite City Wanderers II (1-6) and Harris Academy FP II (0-3).
Meanwhile, Harris Academy notched a second win of the sesson with a 5-3 success over AAM Gordonians II, although the Aberdeen side bounced back to defeat city rivals Granite City Wanderers (5-2).
