Grove Menzieshill and Clydesdale Western in top of the table contest
Undoubtedly, the match of the day in Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s National League Division 1 is the top of the table clash between Milne Craig Clydesdale Western and Grove Menzieshill at Scottish Hockey’s ‘Awesome October’ event on Saturday.
With both teams in emphatic form early season, this will undoubtedly be the biggest test for two teams brimming with international talent. As current champions, the away side will start as favourites, but will have to be at their very best to overcome a young and always improving Titwood outfit.
The following day both teams have arguably easier matches with the Glasgow side facing Glynhill Kelburne in the last of Sunday’s ‘Awesome October’ matches and Grove Menzieshill away to lowly Grange EL.
In the second women’s match at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre on Saturday, fifth plays sixth, with Glynhill Kelburne looking to make it two league wins in a row against GHK. GHK will be looking to get back to winning ways and restore some pride after a heavy defeat last weekend at the hands of Milne Craig Clydesdale Western.
At the other end of the table Western Wildcats, on the back of a terrific defensive performance against Edinburgh University, travel to the capital on Saturday to face bottom of the league Watsonians.
Holding a slender two point advantage over their rivals, the Wildcats will be keen to add some attacking intent to what was a steely defensive rearguard last weekend. Early days, but a massive match for both sides as they look to move away from the bottom of the table.
Both teams have equally as important matches on the Sunday with Western Wildcats up against sixth placed GHK at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre as part of ‘Awesome October’ and Watsonians away to seventh placed CALA Edinburgh.
Dundee Wanderers face Edinburgh opponents on both days, with Grange EL visiting Tayside on the Saturday. Despite two recent defeats against city rivals Grove Menzieshill and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western, Wanderers should still have enough quality to produce a win against Grange.
Sunday’s match will be a much sterner test of their qualities, however, as they face Edinburgh University who are yet to drop a point. This will be Edinburgh University’s first match against any of last season’s top four placed sides.
A lackluster display last weekend away to Western Wildcats may give Wanderers the confidence to subdue their opponent’s striking options. The students should face a less challenging opponent on the Saturday with CALA Edinburgh the latest team to be tested by Sam Judge’s emerging talents.
