Grove continue winning run.
Grove Menzieshill continued their unbeaten start to the season
with a narrow but fully merited 2-1 win over Dundee Wanderers in
the Aberdeen Asset Management Women’s League at Dalnacraig
today.
Grove kept the pressure on their hosts for long periods of the
first half but Wanderers coped well with the goalkeepers, Carmin
Dow and Debbie McLeod, both in fine form making sure there was no
score at the break. The beast chances of the half fell to Ali Bell
(2) whilst Wanderers’ Vikki Bunce carved out a great chance for
Heather Elder.
However early in the second half Ailsa Wylie broke the deadlock
volleying high past Dow following good work from Louise Baxter to
give Grove the lead. The visitors continued to press to no avail
and were made to pay midway through the half when Vikki Bunce’s
fierce drive, from a set piece, flew low in McLeod’s right hand
corner.
Wanderers’ keeper Dow was then forced to pull off two brilliant
saves before Louise Carroll crashed a shot off the crossbar.
However Grove were not going to be denied and Linda Clement secured
the win in the dying moments when she was perfectly positioned to
slot home from a cutback.
CALA Edinburgh continued their fine form moving into second
place with a narrow 2-1 victory over Western Wildcats at
Meggatland. CALA have now set up a top of the table clash with
Grove next weekend with their only defeat to date suffered by the
other Dundee team, Wanderers. Emma Watson scored the two goals
which proved to be enough to seal the points in a closely fought
encounter.
Edinburgh University and Milne Craig Clydesdale Western had to
settle for a share of the spoils in an entertaining game at
Peffermill drawing one apiece. The home side went into the interval
with a one goal advantage courtesy of an effort from Camilla
Lyttle. However a one goal advantage always leads to nervous
finishes and this game proved to be no different with Fiona Bruce
scoring from a short corner in the final minutes to deny the
hosts.
Giffnock continued to show that early season struggles may now
be behind them enjoying a 3-2 home success against a young
Inverleith team finding life in the top division difficult as they
look to make the necessary adjustments to the elevation.
The final game of the programme saw Kelburne and Grange draw 1-1
at Bellahouston with an Amy Hyslop set piece giving the home team
the half time lead. However Grange levelled matters after the break
through an Amy Dudgeon field goal.
