Grove champions in waiting
SUBWAY NATIONAL LEAGUE (WOMEN)
A feisty second half display by champions Grove
Menzieshill kept them in pole position in the Subway national
league with 4-1 win over Tayside rivals VWS Dundee
Wanderers.
Their title looked in a little danger when GB player Vikki Bunce
drove in from the left and fired the ball home to give Wanderers a
1-0 lead at the interval. The champions might have done
better if they had taken all the chances on offer, including five
penalty corners which were dealt with by Wanderers` keeper Carmin
Dow.
Grove picked themselves up the second half and started taking
their chances, and proceeded to score four goals in seven minutes
to close out the contest. Five minutes after the break,
Ali Bell drove up the right and her cross was swept high past Dow
by Ailsa Wyllie for the equaliser. Bell, a thorn in the flesh
of Wanderers, put Grove in front for the first time in the game,
she put the ball in at the post at a penalty corner after the
previous three shots had been charged down. Again Bell
created the third goal and her pass was this time fired home by
Louise Campbell and Wyllie again put the icing on the cake with a
fourth.
Meanwhile, Western did their bit by seeing off Wildcats 3-0 at
Auchenhowie. Fiona Bruce put Western in front for the only
goal of the first half. After the break the result was sealed
with goals from Anna-Mae Morton and captain Catriona Ralph from a
penalty corner.
Glynhill Kelburne moved level with Edinburgh University in
fourth place with a single goal victory over Grange, Amy Hislop was
the only scorer. Grange are still very much in
relegation problems, they remain in second bottom spot and the
play-offs are looming.
However, GHK remain rooted to the foot of the table after losing
3-0 at home to CALA Edinburgh.
