Grove are champions
SUBWAY INDOOR NATIONAL LEAGUE (WOMEN) – BELLS SPORTS
CENTRE, PERTH
Grove Menzieshill have won the Subway indoor nationa
league title after a gap of two years after they saw off the
challenge from city rivals VWS Dundee Wanderers to take the crown
by three points.
FIRST SESSION
After the first round of games the pendulum swung back towards
Wanderers, they beat Grove A 7-0 with four goals coming from Amy
Rowan, including two penalty corner strikes, while Rachael Osborne,
Ashley Bunce and Louise Sheriffs scored the rest.
In the meantime, Grove struggled a little to see off CALA
Edinburgh, winning 6-3 at the end. Grove led 2-1 at the
interval, Ali Bell and Jaime Lyon were on target while Sarah
Robertson replied for the Edinburgh side. The score extended
to 3-3 midway through the second half, Lyon scored another two for
her hat-trick while Robertson again and Emma Watson replied for
CALA. Early in the second half Robertson again and Emma
Watson for CALA and Lyon for Grove left the score at 3-3, but the
Taysiders pulled away in the last eight minutes with Lyon getting
her hat-trick, Bell got a second and Leugh Fawcett at the end
completed the scoring.
The result of these early games put Wanderers into pole
position, three goals in front of their city rivals Grove.
With CALA`s defeat, Kelburne moved into fourth place after
beating Granite City Wanderers 4-1, Amy Hislpot got a double for
the Paisley outfit.
Western were barley stretched with a comfortable 5-0 win over
Clydesdale, last weekend`s giant killers, there were two goals each
for Susan McGilveray and Fiona Bruce, Ellie Cockburn got the
other.
SECOND SESSION
The game of the day bwtween the Dundee title contenders ended in
a 1-1 draw, still leaving the champions three goals in front.
In the head to head Wanderers took n early lead through Becky Ward
from the spot, but Linda Clement`s equaliser in the second half to
put the pressure on the champions.
Elsewhere Western beat Kelburne 6-0 and Clydesdale picked up
another three points with a 4-2 victory over Granite City
Wanderers, here former Olymp[ian Wendy Justice scored twice.
CALA secured fourth spot with an 8-1 win over bottom side Grove A,
Amy Brodie notched four
THIRD SESSION.
Grove gave Wanderers a real mountain to climb when they rattled
in nine goals against Kelburne in their final match, they were five
up at the interval through a hat-trick from Ali Bell while Louise
Baxter and Jaime Lyon got the others. The goal flurry
continued after the interval, Leigh Fawcett scored twice from
penalty corners, Kat Cameron and Louise Carroll got the
remainder.
Needing six goals to lift the trophy, it started well enough
when Amy Rowan put Wanderers into an early lead from a swt piece,
but chasing the goals allowed Western back into the contest and
Kareen Marshall, Anna-Mae Morton and Morag McLellan gave the
Glasgow a crucial 3-1 lead at the interval. Western continued
to punish Wanderers, Susan McGilveray (2), and Marshall (2)
for her hat-trick brought their tally to seven before Sam Sangster
notched a late counter from the spot for the Taysiders.
