Greenock Morton realise benefits of community trust partnership
In May 2014 Greenock Hockey Club made an approach to Greenock Morton Community Trust about the possibility of joining the trust. The initial feedback from Greenock Morton was very positive and the club were given the green light to go ahead.
In July over 93% of Greenock Hockey Club members past and present voted in favour of joining the trust. The final step involved presenting a case to the board of Greenock Morton Football Club so the club could obtain a branding agreement to use the GMFC badge, strips and name.
After only a few months into the new structure the club are already seeing the benefits of being involved in the trust. Benefits have included the set-up of monthly direct debits for membership fees, gift aid, access to an administration team, an increase in sponsorship, joint funding applications, joint advertising and a larger club committee.
This is a really good model for other clubs who may be thinking about joining a trust. The partnership has been successful so far because the club worked hard to ensure sure they had all the key information before taking it to club members. They have also found that communicating a lot with everyone involved at the Trust has led to a lot more joined up projects and partnership working.
If other clubs are interested in doing something similar Greenock Morton found that the main stumbling block was realising how much time the whole process takes – from the first contact being made to the brand agreement being signed took nearly 6 months. However they are already finding the outcomes are very rewarding.
If you would like to chat with the club about the process, please contact Alan Martin
