Greenock Morton Performance Programme
Greenock Morton Hockey Club are part of a partnership project with Inverclyde Trust and Inverclyde Athletics Club which has included the implementation of a new Performance Development Officer Post. The post is managed by Inverclyde Development Trust and funded by Inverclyde Council Graduate Fund and will last for 12 months. Part of the role has been to pilot a performance academy with a view to accessing Direct Club Investment from Sportscotland to sustain the programme thereafter.
Currently 12 club players are part of the programme along with 12 from the Athletics club. There is a strong focus on talent ID within primary school sessions to select potential players for the programme. The performance academy will allow the club to develop a tracking tool to evaluate each player, implement a conditioning element for selected athletes and put in place regular parent and coach sharing sessions. The club hope that this will increase the number of juniors progressing to their adult teams and to district teams.
So far the programme has been well received by club members and players are starting to learn the level of commitment required to progress to the next level of hockey. In the past the club has produced some excellent players that have gone on to represent Scotland and so having a sustainable academy programme in place should ensure the club consistently produce players of this standard.
The club would like to thank the support received from Active Schools in Inverclyde as they are currently line managing the Performance Development Officer and have been very supportive with all developments within the club. Thanks should also go to Lyndsay Morrison and Callum MacLeod from Scottish Hockey for their support to the club on development and performance fronts.
