Great action in the Scottish Cup with a couple of close encounters
Grange men took their unbeaten league record into the cup with a 3-1 win over fifth placed Watsonians. A rocket shot into the roof of the Watsonians net by Fraser Heigh in only three minutes set the tone, but by the interval Ronan Kingsburgh had levelled. However, any shock was stifled by an open play strike from Grange`s Rory McCann and the destiny of the tie was sealed by another goal from Heigh in the final quarter.
Clydesdale may have had ambitions to move into the quarter finals of the cup but found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Edinburgh University at Titwood. Iain McFadden was top scorer with a hat-trick while the student`s other goals came from Robbie Croll and John Stephen, meanwhile Antony Small got Clydesdale`s consolation.
In the other all-Premiership clashes it took the last hit of the game to give last season`s finalists Hillhead a 4-3 win over a plucky, but gutted, Dunfermline Carnegie. Hillhead trailed the Fifers on three occasions as Andrew Doyle with a double and Iain Bruce gave Carnegie hope of an upset. But on each occasion John Reid, Yan Adams and Sean Horgan levelled for the Glasgow outfit. However, as a shoot-out seemed inevitable, up stepped Matt Carder to get the belated winner with a penalty corner deflection and a path to the quarter-finals.
In Edinburgh Inverleith were behind 0-2 and then 1-3 to Uddingston for whom Fin Halliday (2) and Ben Wilson were on target. But four unanswered goals in the second half resulted in a comfortable 6-3 win in the end. Charlie Jack was again top scorer for Inverleith with a hat-trick and the others came from Joel Reid, Stuart Hatton and Livio Belotti.
Kelburne survived a banana skin confrontation with second tier Dundee Wanderers with a narrow 3-2 win, Jay Berry got a double with Scott Peters getting the other. ESM were also Premiership survivers with a 4-3 win at Glasgow University, Jack Adams, Jamie Hogarth (2) and Charlie Fuller were the scorers.
There were no such issues for Western who went to St Andrews and left with a convincing 8-0 win over the students. Rob Harwood was top with four, Andrew McConnell got two while Fraser Calder and Adam Mackenzie scored the others.
Finally, a young Grove Menzieshill side went the journey to Highland on cup business and came away with an impressive five goal win. Murray Griffiths scored twice and the other goals came from Fraser Allan, Murdo Kiddie and Cameron Paton.
In the top contest in the women`s cup holders were given a warm reception by Clydesdale Western at Titwood but came away with a narrow 1-0 victory, Ellie Stott scored the all-important goal.
Second placed Edinburgh University were hardly troubled by Kelburne and emerged 16-0 winners. Jika Nyirenda was the day`s top striker with six, there was a single hat-trick for Hanna McKie while Georgia Jones and Harriet Bradley got two each.
The student`s second string almost joined their seniors in the draw for the next round but finally fell 1-0 to GHK, Laura McCabe scored the winner in the second quarter.
Hillhead saw off Fjordhus Reivers from the lower tier 5-1. The contest was won in the second quarter with a double from Wendy Andrews and another by Zoe Irvine for a three goal lead. In the second half Becky Osborne added a fourth with a penalty corner deflection and the final goal came from Kerry Munro with a back post tap in.
Finally, third placed Wildcats made short work of GHK`s second string with a 6-1 victory at Auchenhowie. Kate Holmes got a double while the other goals came from Rachel Bain, Alex Stuart, Olivia Finch and Megan Cox.
