Grange win European promotion

It was mission accomplished for Grange, the
Edinburgh side achieved promotion at the European Club Champions
Challenge in Zagreb with a fighting 2-1 win over Czech side SV
Slavia in yesterday`s play-off match.
The game was effectively won in the first half when
Fraser Sands scored twice from penalty corners, his trademark drag
flick flew low past the Czech goalkeeper.   Grange had other
chances to extend their lead with chances falling to Matt Connor,
Phil Sully and Cammie Fraser, but no further goals.
With the Grange squad limited by injuries and
illness, they tired in the second half as Slavia pulled one back
with six minutes left, but Grange goalkeeper David Woodcock to
their other attempts at goal.   In a desperate effort to
secure an equaliser, the Czechs took off their keeper and played
with eleven outfield players, They won a last minute penalty corner
but their strike was bravely blocked by Gary Cameron, who was
subsequently taken to hospital with a smashed hand and elbow for
his troubles.
After the game Stuart McMorrow, Grange`s manager,
said:  “This was a good fighting performance, the work rate of
the players was unbelievable, and we thoroughly deserved to win.
To achieve promotion was our target, and we`ve done just
that.”
