Grange top the pool in Vienna
Grange moved to the top of their pool at the EuroHockey Club Trophy in Vienna with a comfortable 3-0 win over Phoenix Zytomyr from Ukraine.
The Scots cause was helped earlier in the day when Cardiff & Met and Austrian hosts Post SV both dropped points in a 3-3 draw, but Grange will still need to beat Cardiff in the final pool match to guarantee their place in Monday`s final. In reality, a draw would still be enough to qualify for the final, but Grange will be going for the win.
Grange manager Martin Shepherdson said: “A fairly tight game, Grange had plenty of chances and the Ukraine keeper played very well. It was a game that Grange dominated and should have added to the score. However, delighted to start with two wins and everything to play for in the game tomorrow.”
After a slow start Grange scored a quick-fire double through David Nairn and Jacob Tweedie to take a two goal lead into the interval. That appeared to be the end of the scoring after the Edinburgh side wasted seven penalty corners, but in the final minute Joe Waterston added a third.
