Grange survive Tayside banana skin
ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT NATIONAL LEAGUE
A goal two minutes from the end by Duncan Riddell gave
Grange a 5-4 victory over Grove Menzieshill on Tayside, a result
that puts the Edinburgh side joint top of the first division in the
Aberdeen Asset Management national league.
The teams reached the interval locked at 2-2, goals by Cammie
Fraser in three minutes and Matt Connor after a defensive error for
Grange were cancelled out by Craig Falconer from a very narrow
angle and Paul Martin for the home side.
Phil Sully put Grange 3-2 up only for Gavin Byers from close range
to restore parity. Grange looked home and dry
when Fraser Sands scored with a penalty corner but again the
Taysiders retaliated with a set piece strike by Gavin Tomlinson to
tie the scores at four apiece.
Inverleith continued their progress up the table with a 3-2 win
over AMN Hillhead. Aidan Docherty, formerly with
Hillhead, scored the only goal of the first half for the Edinburgh
side with a tap in.
Luck did not seem to be going Inverleith`s way, Fabian Wolski
hit a post at a penalty corner, Adam McKenzie had his effort
cleared off the line, and then Hillhead broke away for the
equaliser. Inverleith`s lead was restored when Wolski
fired the ball into the roof of the net at another set
piece. Although McKenzie hit the post again at a
penalty corner, Inverleith finally went 3-1 ahead with a reverse
stick shot from Lewis Gibson which flew into the bottom
corner. Hillhead pulled one back at an overtime penalty
corner, but it was now too little too late.
Western Wildcats moved up the table with a 5-1 win over local
rivals PSL Clydesdale. Scott McCartney was the catalyst
in the first half with two goals, the first from open play and the
other from a penalty corner. The goals continued to
flow after the interval, former Clydesdale player Gary Maitles made
it three while McCartney notched his hat-trick for the fourth,
meanwhile Ciaran Crawford pulled one back for the home
side. However, McCartney was not finished, he had a
brilliant run up the left and his cross left Douglas Simpson with
an open goal for the fifth.
In the women`s competition the top sides won with some
comfort. Champions Grove Menzieshill beat Giffnock
10-0, captain Ailsa Wyllie scored a hat-trick, there were doubles
for Ali Bell and Linda Clement, while Louise Carroll, Karin Belch
and Leigh Fawcett got the others.
Edinburgh University were also on the rampage, four goals from
Sarah Robertson was the catalyst in their 9-1 victory over Western
Wildcats, Nikki Kidd and Lucy Lanigan both scored twice and Heather
Lang got the other goal.
Milne Craig Western cruised to a 5-0 win over newcomers
Inverleith, there were single goals for Anna-Mae Morton, Holly
Cram, Nicola Petticas, Catriona Ralph and Susan McGilveray.
CALA Edinburgh lodged their second victory of the season with a
1-0 win over Glynhill Kelburne, the only goal came from Emma
Watson.
The final game between Dundee Wanderers and Grange ended in a
3-3 draw. The score was level at the interval, Jessica
Ross` strike for Wanderers was cancelled out by Aimee Dudgeon for
the Edinburgh side. Two goals from Heather Elder put
Wanderers 3-1 up, but back came Grange, Dudgeon scored her second
and then Grange grabbed a share of the points with a last touch own
goal.
