Grange start with a win in Vienna
It is so important to start a four team pool competition with a win and Grange did just that by beating Austrian champions Post SV 3-2 at the EuroHockey Club Trophy in Vienna yesterday. However, it is Welsh side Cardiff & Met, who have just secured promotion to the top division in England, that top the pool on goal difference after thumping Phoenix Zytoimyr from Ukraine 8-1.
Grange manager Martin Shepherdson said: “A very tight and tough encounter which Grange shaded and deserved to win. Post are a good outfit and we are delighted to start the tournament with a win.”
The first half was an even and rather uneventful affair and looked like closing goalless, but in the final minute up popped Aussie Dylan Bean to give Grange a single goal lead, he followed up a shot from Duncan Riddell.
Grange`s lead was short lived, in the first minute of the second half the Austrians drew level with a penalty corner strike from Tobias Mimmler. And that is how the score stood until just before the end of the third quarter when Bean was again on target to give Grange a 2-1 lead.
There was an early exchange of goals in the final quarter, Maximilian Scholz levelled for the Austrians at a penalty corner that deflected in off a Grange defender. A couple of minutes later Calum Lothian restored Grange`s lead, with some skill he eluded an Austrian defender and placed his shot into the far corner.
Next Grange take on the Ukrainian side Phoenix and manager Martin Shepherdson will be looking for a sizeable win to keep up the pressure on Cardiff.
