Grange progress this time in the cup
Grange put a halt to CALA`s Arthur McKay Scottish Cup
aspirations with a comfortable 4-2 win at Peffermill, and the score
could have been higher but for a string of impressive saves from
keeper Sean Hadfield.
CALA set up a shock potential with an early penalty corner
strike by Scott Sutherland, but the lead was short-lived when Rob
Barr equalised from a set piece. Phil Sully gave Grange a 2-1
half-time lead when he converted a Duncan Riddell cross.
Grange took the initiative after the interval and strolled into
a 4-1 lead through Barr again from a set piece and Matt Connor,
Ramsay Bell`s late strike for CALA proved to be little more than a
consolation.
The shock of the first round was to be found in the North-East
where second division Granite City Wanderers edged VWS Dundee
Wanderers from the top flight out of the competition with a 3-2
victory. Elton Wilens, John Graham and Meldrum McKenzie found
the net for the underdogs while Ross Glashen and Bobby Ralph from
the spot scored for Wanderers.
Four goals from Ciaran Crawford was the foundation of Greaves
Clydesdale`s eight goal victory over Waverley Inveresk Trinity, the
others came from Ben Peterson, Gordon Munro, Fraser Hirst and Allan
Law.
Inverleith also progressed into the next round with a 3-0 win
over Glasgow University, the scorers were Andrew Sinclair from a
penalty corner and Aidan Docherty along with John Harris from open
play. A similar score allowed Grove Menzieshill to advance at
the expense of St Andrews University.
The North-East derby between AAM Gordonians and Aberdeen GS
ended in a 2-0 win for the former while the biggest score of the
round went to Watsonians who saw off Stirling University
13-2. Western Wildcats also reached double figures against
Falkirk, Scott McCartney notched a double hat-trick and Douglas
Simpson got a double.
In the women` first round Western Wildcats survived their banana
skin encounter with Milne Craig Western Clydesdale`s second string
with a narrow 3-2 victory. The foundation of the
Wildcats’ triumph was a two goal lead at the interval, Jen Lennox
and Rhona Stewart finding the net. Although Sheena
McKelvie scored twice from set pieces in the second half, the
additional strike from Alice McArthur was sufficient for a place in
the next round.
In the all-first division clash Giffnock beat GHK 3-0, Iona
Steven, Julie Mitchell and Rhona Simpson were on target for the
East Renfrewshire side.
Milne Craig Clydesdale Western had a comfortable eight goal
victory over Hillhead, captain Catriona Ralph scored twice and
there were singles from Nicola Pitticas, Jenny Eadie, Holly Cram,
Anna-Mae Morton, Susan McGilivray and Nicki Skrastin.
Other first division side Grange survived a potential tricky
assignment away to Inverleith and emerged 3-0 winners
