Grange, Kelburne, Grove and Wanderers in the final
ARTHUR McKAY SCOTTISH CUP SEMI-FINALS –
PEFFERMILL
MEN
The Arthur McKay Scottish Cup final in two weeks time at
Peffermill will be between newly crowned league champions Glynhill
Kelburne and Grange.
In the first tie Grange got off to the best of starts against
Inverleith in the opening semi-final, Gary Cameron found himself on
his own at the top of the circle and lashed the ball into the roof
of the net off the pads of keeper Graham Stuart. Inverleith
soon retaliated, the Grange defence failed to clear their lines and
left Phil Hall to push the ball over the line for the
equaliser.
Grange had several chances to take the lead again, Phil Sully
completely missed a cross while Matt Connor had his effort blocked
by the keeper. But they finally got their noses in front at a
penalty corner, Cameron`s shot from the top of the circle was
deflected high into the net by Cammie Fraser.
Inverleith were back in the races five minutes after the break
with perhaps the goal of the season, the ball broke to Tom Cousins
at the top of the circle and he promptly volleyed the high ball
past a dazzled Colin Johnstone. Grange then turned the screw,
but missed a myriad of chances, including five penalty
corners. Just when a penalty shoot-out looked the likely
destiny, a cross from Fraser was brilliantly deflected into the net
by Phil Sully for the winner.
In the second match Kelburne pressed for most of the first half
and should have taken the lead in 30 minutes but Chris Nelson`s
spot effort was saved by Gavin Sommerville in the Western
goal. But just on the interval the Paisley side took the
lead, Willie Marshall`s initial shot was blocked and Michael
Christie followed up to sink the rebound.
The Wildcats had a chance to establish parity but Scott
McCartney put the ball wide from the spot, and were promptly
punished when Christie again, Alan Forsyth and towards the end Lee
Morton gave the Kelburne a comfortable four goal victory.
WOMEN
The final in a fortnight`s time will be an all-Tayside affair as
both Grove Menzieshill and VWS Dundee Wanderers won today`s
semi-finals.
In the first tie Grove were taken to a penalty shoot-out by
Milne Craig Western after a 2-2 draw in normal time, Catriona Ralph
missed from the spot for Western while Leigh Fawcett found the net
to put the Taysiders into the final.
Grove were two up in 20 minutes, Linda Clement opened when she
picked the ball up in plenty of space, she rounded Amy Gibson in
the Western goal and diving pushed the ball into the empty
goal. The second came when a direct shot by Louise Baxter at
a penalty corner was half stopped by defender Susan McGilveray but
the ball progressed over the line.
Western came more into the game and pulled one back at a set
piece, Ralph`s initial shot was saved by the Grove keeper and
Nicola Skrastin followed up to slot the ball home.
After Jenny Hendry saved the ball on the Western goalline early
in the second half, the Glasgow side controlled affairs. The
equaliser came in 50 minutes, Helen Walker and Fiona Bruce carved
open the Grove defence, the ball was deflected on to Holly Cram who
finished with a vicious low shot.
Grove went on to win the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4.
CALA Edinburgh`s cup run came to an abrupt end with a 5-1 defeat
at the hands of Dundee Wanderers. The Taysiders were a
goal up at the interval through Kyle Ely. Two goals in
as many minutes from Heather Elder at a penalty corner and Amy
Rowan effectively killed off the tie as a contest. Amber
McNeill did pull one back for the Edinburgh side, but Rowan again
and Becky Ward from the spot put the tie well beyond CALA.
