Grange depart the EuroLeague
EUROLEAGUE
GRANGE 0 BERLINER 8
It was always going to be a tough assignment for Grange in their
first appearance in the EuroLeague since 2007, and so it proved to
be as the Edinburgh side went down 8-0 to German champions
Berliner, who were making their debut in the event, in their second
pool match.
After losing heavily to Rotterdam, the Scots needed to win to
progress to the knock-out stages.
The opening exchanges were all Berliner and the Grange defence did
well to absorb the pressure with Sean Hadfield in goal forced into
several good saves. However, the breakthrough came in
13 minutes when Olympic gold medallist Martin Haner beat Hadfield
with a low shot at a penalty corner. Further strikes
were added by Richard Braun and Haner again, leaving Grange with a
mountain to climb. The Scots adventurous spirit was
limited to a few sorties into the German half, but no shots at
goal. Just before the interval Berliner made it
four when Kevin Lim took advantage of a poor clearance by the
Grange defence.
It looked ominous for the final total when Martin Zwicker, Jonas
Gomoll, Haner for his hat-trick and Niklas Cartsburg doubled the
German total. In the interim Grange had their first
chance at goal, Cammie Fraser made an opening for himself but his
effort went wide of the target.
Instead of simply crumbling, Grange entered their best spell of the
contest and gained four penalty corners, the first went wide of the
target, the second was won by the tenacity of Hamish Imrie but Rob
Barr`s flick was saved by the German goalkeeper, and Barr`s next
effort was blocked by the outrunning defender. The Scots
appear to have won a penalty stroke when Barr`s set piece flick was
saved by the keeper who then apparently committed a stick chop, but
the decision was subsequently reversed by the video umpire as it
transpired the keeper has in fact made contact only with the
ball.
