Grange – CALA cup rematch
The opening round of the Arthur McKay Scottish Cup has
not often produced a plum tie, but this Sunday`s meeting of first
division sides Grange and CALA Edinburgh is a match to
savour.
Apart from the local derby label, ironically the two sides met
in the same competition this time last year and CALA, then in the
second division, produced the shock of the round by knocking out
Grange in a penalty shoot-out after the sides drew 4-4 in normal
time.
CALA have since gained promotion to the top flight and sit a
respectable fifth in the table, but Grange are already title
contenders, lying equal in points with Glynhill Hotel Kelburne at
the top.
Last season`s early exit from the competition was a shock to the
system at Grange and captain Rob Barr is not for any
repetition:
“We had a poor run in the Scottish Cup last year, but this
season we will be looking to get through to the final stages of the
competition.”
Grange will start clear favourites for the tie with their
perfect league form, but Neil Allan, CALA`s coach, will be plotting
for a second lightning strike at one of the country`s leading
sides.
The other first division sides should progress safely to the
next round against opposition from lower leagues, but bottom side
VWS Dundee Wanderers may be on a shaky peg away to Granite City
Wanderers, currently lying next from top in the second
division.
The tie with the greatest interest in the women`s Scottish Cup
sees first division Western Wildcats travel to Titwood to face
Milne Craig Clydesdale Western`s second string. The
latter are now in a reserve league, but in the past they more than
held their own in the top flight and sent more fancied opposition
out of the competition on a regular basis. Their
experience comes from former Scotland players Kath Gray and Sharon
Duncan, the rest of the side is made up of promising
youngsters.
Two other first division sides are at risk of leaving the cup at
an early stage, GHK are away to Giffnock who recently beat them 6-1
in the league, Rhona Simpson scoring four times. Bottom side
Grange make the short trip to Inverleith, currently runners-up in
the second division and with their own tradition of giant-killing
in the cup.
