Grange beat Western while Edinburgh University go top of men’s Premiership on goal difference

There is no doubting the game of the day was at Auchenhowie, Grange were the visitors and took the three points back down the M8 with a 2-1 win over Western Wildcats.

Grange were ahead at the interval courtesy of a direct strike by Aussie Dylan Bean at a penalty corner. The Edinburgh side doubled their tally with a well worked penalty corner routine which left Jamie Green scoring from a deflection. Fraser Moran pulled one back for Wildcats from the penalty spot late in the contest which proved to be only a consolation.

At the end of the game Grange manager Martin Shepherdson said: “This was a tremendous effort from the squad and it was undoubtedly our best performance of the season, we defended well and had more chances than Western, this was a very good result for us.”

Steven Percy, Western`s coach responded:” The margins are always very tight in these games we had not so many chances but we were missing three key players which always makes the difference.”

Despite Grange`s victory and their perfect record so far this season, it is Edinburgh University who top the Premiership tonight on goal difference after a convincing 7-3 win over Inverleith. Once again, it was Keir Robb who took the limelight with a hat-trick, the other goals came from Alex Wilson, Johnny Bradley, Sam Hunt and Tom Fox.

Inverleith captain Kyle Taylor said: “A good effort from the lads today, the score line probably didn`t reflect how the game was. We made a few mistakes and Uni capitalised on it. They are a very good side so it`s nice to see how we compare against them.”

Another huge result of the day occurred at Glasgow Green where previously pointless Kelburne saw off previously undefeated Clydesdale 4-3. There were doubles each for Luke Bannerman and Tommy Austin while Liam King, Andrew Allan and Ethan Robertson replied for the Dale.

Uddingston emerged from the pack to move well into the top six with a commanding 5-0 win over Dundee Wanderers. The Lanarkshire scorers were Mamat Berry (2), Fahmi Khalid, Jedd Campbell and Finn Halliday, who also had the luxury of missing from the spot.

Before this weekend Hillhead were pointless, but went to Watsonians and came away with a 4-3 win. Hillhead were 3-1 up at the interval, Matt Carder opened with a deft sweep over the keeper followed by strikes by Fraser Ward and Murray Ross. Watsonians had a plethora of penalty corners in the second half and got the score back to 3-3. But the winner came in the final quarter when Jackson Corry Duff swept the ball home for the winner although Hillhead had to survive another barrage of penalty corners to hold on to the three points. Watsonians` scorers were Danny Cain (2) and Dan Coultas.

Grove Menzieshill and ESM was the only draw of the day, After a goalless first half Dan Moulin opened for ESM in the third quarter but the Taysiders levelled with a touch home by Simon Huggon following a cross from Jamie Spratt. ESM might have left Dundee with all three points but Stevie Mcilravey saved their spot effort.

Grove Menzieshill coach Gav Byers said: “It was a good game of hockey, two teams trying to play good structured hockey. We had the better of the first half, they had the better of the second half.”
