Gold for Azets Clydesdale Western in Alanya
CLYDESDALE WESTERN 3 ROTWEISS WETTINGEN (SWITZERLAND) 0
It was mission accomplished for Azets Clydesdale Western player/coach Fiona Semple, after seeing off Swiss side Rotweiss Wettingen 3-0 in the final of the EuroHockey Club Trophy 11 competition in Alanya, the Titwood side collected the gold medal and in the process won every game. Along with promotion which had already been secured the previous day, these were the goals set out by Fiona Semple in her tournament preview – and they were secured in some style.
Watsonians will be the benefactors of promotion as they will now play in the second tier Trophy 1 competition next season, Clydesdale on the other hand are due to take part in the elite EHL event.
In the previous three games Clydesdale were used to have the contest well won by half-time, but not so in the final. However, they were given an early lead, in seven minutes Ava Graham broke the deadlock with an open play strike. And that is how it stood until the 24th minute when Emma McGregor doubled the lead. Clydesdale had a couple of penalty corners immediately after but they came to nothing, and that is how it stood at the interval.
Further penalty corners and open play chances came and went in the third quarter but without success, although Clydesdale managed to keep that clean sheet at the other end.
However, any possible jitters at the final outcome were ended in the final quarter with a third goal from captain Millie Steiger. And that is how it ended…with undefeated Clydesdale taking the gold.
