GOALS-A-PLENTY IN THE CUP
There was a feast of goals in the first round of the Scottish Cup held today, but no shocks as all the Premiership sides passed into the next round with varying degrees of ease.
However, one game which did not take place was the tie between Stirling Wanderers and Glasgow University. It was reported by Glasgow`s Catriona Humphery that some team members were involved in a car crash, fortunately “everybody is OK but very shook up” and it was decided to postpone the game and hopefully play at a later date.
Premiership leaders GHK won 4-0 against Edinburgh Hockey Club with two in each half. The opener came from a great reverse stick cross from Susan McGilveray to the back post for Skye Stuart to tip in. Lucy Williamson doubled the tally with a push past the keeper into the bottom corner.
Williamson added a third with a direct strike at a penalty corner and the scoring was completed with a rocket shot from a narrow angle by McGilveray into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
In the battle of the Universities Premiership Edinburgh notched eight against Stirling, there were two goals each for Amy Brodie and Margery Justice.
Dundee Wanderers scored their first competitive win of the season with a magnificent seven against Edinburgh Hockey Club`s second string. Sam Sangster scored twice while the other strikes came from Hannah Young, Amy Snelle, Megan Cant, Eve Hewitt and Jess Martin.,
Grove also moved into the next round after a 4-2 win away at Glasgow University 2s. The Taysiders were four up at the interval through Kerryn Berndsen (2) along with Emma Tennant and Caitlin Brown. Grove then allowed the students back into the match and a couple of goals, but the outcome was never really in doubt.
Uddingston were much less stretched, they had a walk-over against Grove`s second string.
High scoring Watsonians made short work of National League leaders Inverleith with a 9-2 win – their second nine goal scoring spree in the weekend. Scotland striker Sarah Jamieson got five, Ellie Stott a hat-trick while Nikki Stobie got the other, Kirsty Cannon replied with both for for Inverleith.
Watsonians` coach Keith Smith remarked: “We played really well for long periods, just need to work on being more clinical in the circle, and make sure we cut out the defensive lapses.”
There were also nine goals for Erskine Stewart`s Melville at Strathclyde University – two goals each for Ava Allan, Kerrie Craig and Connie Roxburgh while singles came from Sophie Atherton, Kat Kutereba and Jen Tait.
Hillhead travelled the long journey to Inverness with only 11 players and no keeper but still came away with a 4-2 win over Highland to move into the draw for the second round. But Carla MacNiven was certainly not travel weary with a hat-trick, two back post tap-ins at penalty corners and the other a reverse stick shot. Olivia Robertson got Hillhead`s other goal with a deflection following a cross by Jess Lee.
Wildcats won comfortably with a 14 goal victory at GHK 2s. Amy Grassom starred with five, Rona Stewart got three, there were two each for Alex Stewart and Olivia Finch with singles by Sue Campbell and Kate Holmes.
Clydesdale Western were not so severe on Edinburgh University`s second string with a modest 6-0 win, there were two goals each for Millie Steiger and Jenny Eadie with Lexi Sabatelli and Laura Paul adding to the tally.
Grange Edinburgh Ladies, second in the National League, were 6-0 winners over Falkirk & Linlithgow
The only Premiership side involved in the men`s Scottish Cup today was Inverleith and they show absolutely no mercy to National League side Granite City Wanderers with a 15 goal tally. There were hat-tricks for Xavax Cordero and Ollie Wilson, two each for James Stuart, Kyle Taylor, Rory MacDougall and Stuart Hatton and Edward Iffla only got one.
Elsewhere Gordonians beat Perthshire 2-1 in an all-National League encounter.
