Goalless draw for Edinburgh University in the Euros
Edinburgh University 0-0 UCD (Ireland)
A goalless draw with pool leaders UCD from Ireland consigned Edinburgh University to third place in the table and promotion is off the agenda.
The writing was on the wall when Czech side Rakovnik were 2-0 winners over Swansea in the earlier game – that meant that the Edinburgh students needed to beat UCD to overtake them into the runners-up spot – a draw was not enough.
And Edinburgh needed to beat UCD by more than two goals – a challenge since the Irish had yet to concede a goal, and after this contest they still haven`t!
A draw would suggest a close encounter but Edinburgh coach Sam Judge suggested differently. “It wasn`t that close. We dominated possession, missed from the penalty spot, and had a couple of really good opportunities. The girls played really well but just couldn`t capitalise with some goals.”
Sadly there were no goals to report, but Edinburgh University finally finished third in the pool table and will play off for fifth place overall.
