Germany set the bar for Scots in Cologne
Scotland U18W’s trip to Cologne for two matches against European heavyweights Germany proved to be a significant learning experience for the players ahead of the U18 Nations Championship in Spain this summer.
Head Coach Justine Allen said, “We came to Germany to test ourselves against some of the best players in Europe in the age group and we will come away having learnt a lot about what it takes to perform at European A Division level. This is just the beginning.”
A great display in the first match saw the Scots narrowly beaten 3-2
Germany scored in the fifth minute, and Scottish goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made a fine save 10 minutes later from a penalty stroke to prevent the Germans doubling their lead.
Tess Hannah equalised for Scotland in the 20th minute from a penalty corner to leave the score 1-1 at half time.
However, Germany restored their advantage in the 50th minute and extended their lead to 3-1 sixty seconds later. Laura Swanson then scored Scotland’s second goal from a penalty stroke five minutes from full-time.
A disappointing second match was the result against a fired up German side. Despite the 11-0 scoreline the Scottish girls worked tirelessly until the final whistle. There were some strong individual performances from Ellie Hutcheson and Laura Swanson.
