GB women finish second in the pool

Although Great Britain and the Netherlands had already
secured their places in the semi-final stages, it was the latter
who topped the pool with a 2-1 win over Danny Kerry`s
charges. Team GB finish second and will take on
either Australia or Argentina for a place in the
final.
In a tight first half the Dutch were the controlling influence
and Ann Panter had to made a stick save to keep the scoresheet
blank. Despite the Dutch pressure, it was GB who
took the lead in 28 minutes, Alex Danson won the penalty corner and
a trademark Crista Cullen low drag flick converted. Only a
brilliant save from Beth Storry prevented a Dutch equaliser just on
the interval.
The Dutch were the controlling influence in the second half and
were on level terms in 42 minutes with a well worked penalty corner
that was finished off by Naomi van As. With wave
after wave of Dutch attacks, the Dutch second goal was almost
inevitable, Kitty van Male was on hand to touch the ball over the
line after Storry had blocked the first attempt at
goal. Only a late double save from Storry kept the
Dutch from scoring a third just on the final whistle.
