GB men sunk by Dutch in the Olympic semi-final
OLYMPIC SEMI-FINALS – MEN
GREAT BRITAIN 2
NETHERLANDS 9
The hype was behind Great Britain to gain a place in the
final of the Olympic tournament, but sadly the performance did not
live up to the expectation, as Jason Lee`s charges were crushed 9-2
by a rampant Netherland`s side in the semi-final at the Riverside
Arena. Lee`s task now is to lift his flagging players
to take on Australia, originally favourites for the gold medal, in
the quest for bronze tomorrow.
The writing was on the wall in the first half as the confident
Dutch marched into a 4-1 lead at the interval, Roderick Weustof
scored twice from penalty corners, Mink ven der Weerden also found
the net from a set piece and Billy Bakker notched the fourth just
on the interval. Only an Ashley Jackson penalty corner
strike lifted the gloom while shortly after a Barry Middleton
deflection sailed over the bar.
The second half was one-way traffic as the Dutch seemed to be
able to score at will, Bakker and Weustof completed their
hat-tricks, while there were also goals for Teun de Nooijer and
Floris Evers to complete the rout. Rob Moore
notched one for GB at the death, but it took little away from the
rampant Dutch performance.
In the other semi-final Germany shocked world number one
Australia with a thrilling 4-2 win to set up a mouth-watering final
against the apparently unstoppable Dutch.
