GB honours cap presentation
Colin Fraser, President Scottish Hockey and Jenny Grassick, Chair Scottish Hockey Heritage Group, were delighted to host the second in a series of Scottish GB honours caps presentation on 28th December, 2022 at Baberton Golf Club in Edinburgh.
The players receiving the caps were Gillian Messenger, who gained 23 caps between 1986 and 1993, and Graham Moodie, who gained 56 caps between 2003 and 2008, as well as playing at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Gillian was presented with her cap by Jenny Grassick who, as her PE teacher, introduced Gillian to hockey in S2 at Firrhill High School and then to Edinburgh Ladies Hockey Club.
Graham was presented with his cap by Gail and Lee Cousins. Gail introduced Graham to hockey at Dean Park Primary School in Balerno and encouraged him to join Inverleith Hockey Club where Lee coached him as a junior.
Dennis Hay, the only Scot to have played for and coached GB at an Olympics, then shared the floor with Lee Cousins. Lee was presented with the GB Medal of Honour Rose Bowl by GB hockey in 2014, for “exceptional service to Great Britain Hockey over a sustained period”.
Lee spoke about what motivated him to get involved with the board of GB Hockey, and his desire that every young hockey player living in any region of Scotland, should have the opportunity to play for Great Britain.
Dennis shared Lee’s vision for elite sport but also his own experience of developing hockey at all levels. Dennis has often described hockey in terms of “it’s not about reaching the summit, it’s about who you meet on the way there”. It was an inspiring way to round off a most enjoyable presentation.
