Game 2 in Valencia sees Scotland women lose to Spain

Spain 5-2 Scotland

Spain came out on top against Scotland women in the second game of a three-match test series with a 5-2 victory. The result follows a 1-1 draw in the opening match with the third game set to play tomorrow morning in Valencia.

The home side got off to a great start as Spain scored in the first minute capitalising in a slow Scotland opening to go 1-0 up. Scotland soon steadied the ship, however, and created some chances in quarter one, but couldn’t quite find the final ball into good space.

In the second quarter Spain doubled their advantage to enjoy a 2-0 lead at half time. Scotland made some structural changes at the break to try to negate some of the Spanish threats and were rewarded when they scored a beautiful goal through Katherine McLaren, who creatively managed to lift the ball over the goalkeeper at the far post for 2-1.

The Scots began to press more aggressively and enjoyed the ascendancy but an error on the ball allowed a Spanish 2v1 on the goalkeeper to go 3-1 up. The goal spiked the Spanish hosts as they went to 4-1 soon after a goal through a straight hit from a corner.

Spain went 5-1 ahead before Scotland pulled another back through a delightful penalty corner goal from Heather McEwan, deflecting from a Katie Birch delivery to complete the scoring.

Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “There are things we’re trying to develop here and we’re pleased with the progress from that perspective, but obviously we want to be competitive in every single game. We play our last game tomorrow and we’re happy with many things we’ve developed so far, which is good, and we’re looking forward to competing in the last game.”
