Fun in the sun at Summer Festivals
Once again, our Summer Festivals have proved to be a huge hit with young players and coaches across the country. Following the success of the U12’s event in Glasgow, we headed to the gorgeous Perthshire countryside for the U14 and U16 tournaments
U14 Mixed Festival
10 clubs from all regions entered the U14 Mixed event on 28 May at Strathallan School. Four clubs – Kelso, Grange, Perthshire and Watsonians – all entered two teams to make it a 14-team tournament.
After their group games, the teams finished with a play-off match. In the two semi-finals in each half of the draw, Dundee Wanderers beat Watsonians Maroon 2-0; and Watsonians White beat Grange 3-1. And in an exciting final, Wanderers came from behind to won 2-1 to claim the trophy.
All of the players enjoyed playing different teams that they don’t usually play during the season. It was great to see Trossachs Tigers making the journey from Callander, as well as clubs from Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Falkirk and the Borders – and the ‘locals’ from Perthshire. Everyone had fun and took home a Scottish Hockey wristband!

U16 Girls Festival
The U16 Girls Festival on 3 June was held on a sweltering hot day at Glenalmond College. After each match, the nine teams were quick to head for the shade and much-needed refreshments served up by the Glenalmond pupils!
In a really friendly tournament, all the teams were of a very similar standard and every match was closely contested. In the end, Grange and Watsonians qualified for an exciting final, with ‘Sonians girls producing a strong performance to win it. Edinburgh HC beat Kelso to finish 3rd.
Thank you to Karen Thomson from Perthshire for organising all the umpires. The young trainees did a fantastic job and enjoyed the experience.

Unfortunately the Boys’ Festival had to be cancelled after a few teams pulled out. But the boys have had a busy season and deserve their rest!
Thank you to Strathallan and Glenalmond for being such excellent hosts and contributing hugely to the success of these events. We’ve had a really enjoyable Festival season.
