Four matches on Scotland’s day 1 of School Games 2018
Scotland boy’s and girls’ squads both played two matches each in their opening day of Schools Games 2018, with lots of action and goals throughout the day.
Boys | Scotland 0-3 England White
Scotland boys’ were defeated 3-0 by England White in their opening match of School Games 2018. It was a much closer match than the score suggests with the Scots unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.
It was a goalless opening quarter but it was Scotland who were in charge of the action.
Scotland started the second quarter strongly but England White began to battle their way into the match. It was with under five minutes of the match remaining that England White took the lead and it was through a tremendous individual goal.
England White 5 won the ball half way in the Scotland half, surged past four Scottish defenders and swept the ball low into the net. 1-0.
Scotland started the third quarter well and nearly scored when John Stephen zipped the ball goal-ward, but the goalkeeper stood strong and saved well at his near post.
Scotland continued to press in search of an equaliser but then got caught on the break. Timothe Launois surged forward in acres of space on the right and made it 2-0 by taking the ball past the goalkeeper and finishing well.
It went to 3-0 from a deadly drag flick finish by Tom Sheldon at a penalty corner in the final quarter.
Girls | Scotland 4-0 England Blue
It was a tremendous 4-0 victory for Scotland girls’ in their first match of School Games 2018 against England Blue.
England Blue had a very strong start to the contest and pinned the Scots back in their 25 in the opening minutes.
It was Scotland however who took the lead and scored two goals in a minute. The first was scored by Izzy Folan after the Scots tore forward and Folan slid a simple strike into the corner of the goal to go 1-0 up.
Immediately it went to 2-0 with Ellie MacKenzie scoring with a low flick from the penalty spot.
On the stroke of half time Scotland went 3-0 up and it was MacKenzie at the double with a neat finish from close range.
The Scots came close to making it four from a penalty corner; a deflection seemed to be heading for the roof of the net but the England Blue defender on the line very calmly cleared the ball to deny the goal.
Scotland wouldn’t be denied a fourth for long and Ellie Stott scored with the match drawing to a close to make it 4-0, and round of a successful opening match for Scotland.
It was a delightful goal by Stott who broke into the D wide right, looked set to pass the ball back but sent the goalkeeper, and everyone else in the ground, a dummy before rounding the keeper and finishing on the reverse.
Girls | Ulster 4-0 Scotland
Scotland girls’ were beaten 4-0 by Ulster in the second of their two matches of the day in the School Games 2018.
After a bright start with both teams playing some good hockey it was Ulster who took the lead through an opportunistic finish by Nadia Benallal. Ulster attacked down the right and the ball squirmed past the advancing Scotland goalkeeper to find Benallal waiting in the centre of goal with an empty net in front of her. 1-0.
The goal gave Ulster a boost and they went hunting for more. A great double save from an Ulster penalty corner routine saw Scotland battle to stay in the contest.
Ulster soon doubled their advantage through a Jess Hood penalty corner; the Scotland goalkeeper got an outstretched foot to the ball but could only watch as it popped up into the roof of the net for 2-0.
Scotland goalkeeper Amber Murray was called into action again from a penalty corner, saving at point blank range from Olivia Mullan.
Hood then bagged her second penalty corner goal of the game when she sailed a drag flick into the top left corner for 3-0.
Olivia Berry scored Ulster’s fourth goal in the final quarter with a deflection from a penalty corner with Murray well beaten in goal.
Boys | England Red 4-4 Scotland
Scotland boys’ and England Red battled out a 4-4 goal-fest in the second match of the day at the School Games in Loughborough.
It was England Red who took the lead in the opening quarter when Sam Buckingham struck to make it 1-0.
Early in the second quarter it went to 2-0 as Ben Georgel slammed home a penalty corner to put England Red clear in the lead.
Scotland struck back immediately and it was Fraser Heigh who scored to pull it back to 2-1.
On the stroke of half time Jacob Tweedie equalised for Scotland to round off an electric quarter for the Scots.
Tweedie then scored his second, and Scotland’s third, after half time to put Scotland deservedly in front for the first time of the match.
A penalty stroke then gave Heigh his second, and Scotland’s fourth, late in the third quarter as Scotland began to pull away.
The final quarter brought an England Red fightback and it began with a Fred Newbold strike from a penalty corner. A few minutes later and Jake Sorrenson equalised with the full time whistle looming, which brought an exciting an action-packed contest to a close.
