Forsyth and Imrie on target against Wales
VOLVO EUROPEAN JUNIOR NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIPS (MEN) – DEN
BOSCH (NED) – 26 AUGUST to 01 SEPTEMBER 2012
SCOTLAND 3 WALES 0
Two goals from Glynhill Kelburne striker Alan Forsyth
and another from 16-year-old Hamish Imrie gave Scotland`s under 21
side a survival lifeline with a 3-0 win over Wales in the
relegation pool of the European Junior Nations Championships in Den
Bosch.
But Graham Moodie`s charges are only half-way towards staying in
Europe`s top flight and an automatic place in the 2013 Junior World
Cup, these targets will only be realised if the young Scots see off
England tomorrow. With one game remaining, the Scots
still lie a point behind England and Spain who drew 4-4 in the
other pool match.
After a fairly even opening, the Scots youngsters had their
noses in front at their first penalty corner, the ball was slipped
left and Forsyth rifled it into the Welsh net. Scotland
had three further set pieces but Fraser Sands` efforts were blocked
by the Welsh defence. However, just on the interval Forsyth
took a quick free hit and beat two defenders, he found Scott
Lindsay in the circle and his square pass was dispatched first time
into the roof of the net by Imrie to double Scotland`s lead.
Early in the second half further chances fell to Ben Peterson,
Imrie and Lindsay, but their efforts were not on target. In
52 minutes a move down the left found Peterson, but he was taken
out before he could unleash his shot, and Forsyth calmly scored
with a low flick from the spot for the crucial third
goal.
The Scots almost notched a fourth but Imrie missed the target
from an acute angle. A further opportunity fell to Ed Greaves
but the Glynhill Kelburne players could not get his shot
away. With Michael Bremner in the sin-bin, the Welsh tried to
come back into the contest, but their three penalty corner efforts
were well blocked by Scotland goalkeeper Thomas O`Kelly, and the
Scots youngsters ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
