Final day of School Games 2018
There were entertaining matches to finish off Scotland’s School Games 2018 campaign with a win for the girls’ and a defeat for the boys’.
Girls | Scotland 3-2 England White
Scotland girls’ finished their School Games 2018 campaign with an excellent 3-2 win over England White to secure third place in the tournament.
It was an excellent start to the contest for Scotland and they got off to an absolute flyer when Ellie Stott scored in the sixth minute.
The Scots were content to soak up England White pressure then thunder forward on the counter attack. The pace of Ellie Mackenzie and the control of Jenny Walls caused problems for England when Scotland played at speed.
Mackenzie nearly made it 2-0 when she won the ball midway in the England half and weaved her way into only to be fouled at the vital moment. Anna Hoollaghan cannoned the resulting penalty corner just over the bar.
The second quarter followed the same pattern as the first and the Mackenzie outlet for Scotland was causing all sorts of problems, and it was from this that Scotland went 2-0 up. A long pass found Mackenzie out wide on the left, she drove at the defence and turned them inside out with some lovely skill, then slipped the ball low past the goalkeeper to score.
As half time approached Scotland went 3-0 up when Lucy Williamson hammered a low reverse shot against the backboard from a penalty corner rebound.
Late in the third quarter England White pulled one back from a penalty corner. The ball was switched to the left for Lottie Gill who had enough time to pick her spot and slide it low past the goalkeeper to pull it back to 3-1.
With five minutes remaining England White scored again. A good save by Amber Murray saw the ball fall kindly for the England White attack, waiting unmarked at the far post for a tap-in was Polly Jones to make it 3-2.
Scotland withstood the late England White pressure to hold on for a 3-2 victory.
Boys | Scotland 0-2 England Blue
Scotland Boys’ were defeated in their last match of Futures Cup 2018, going down 2-0 to England Blue in an entertaining match at School Games 2018. Scotland finish the tournament in fifth spot.
There was a bright start to the contest, the Scots were playing some nice hockey but it was England Blue who took the lead. Joshua Rundle popped up in the right place at the right time to finish neatly and put England Blue into a 1-0 lead early doors.
It was a very competitive affair as the game continued and Scotland were every bit a match for their opposition.
It was England Blue however who were next to get on the score sheet and put the game beyond doubt. The goal came from a penalty corner with under five minutes remaining and Edward Ferguson struck well to score and make it 2-0.
A late push by Scotland couldn’t result in any goals and England Blue clocked up a good victory to finish off the tournament on a win.
