Exin Masters Hockey World Cup – Terrassa 2018 – Scotland O40 Men
Scotland O40 men started their World Cup campaign against Ireland with a 1-1 draw. The Scots were disappointed not to have taken more from the game but the performance gave them confidence for the next match against Argentina. Duncan Batchelor provided the Scotland goal from open play, while the Ireland goal came from a penalty corner.
The second match of the tournament resulted in a 2-2 draw with Argentina. Scotland were 1 down midway through first period but early in second period Scotland levelled through a Colin Moulding field goal. After half time Scotland got ahead again with Alan Wall scoring, field goal, from a good passage of play. Argentina scored the equaliser on 45 minutes and the score remained at half time. There was some really good play in this match with a number of chances created, all in all a more positive performance and a feeling within the squad that the Scots could have got more from the game once again.
The Scots clocked up their first win with a 2-1 victory over Oman with Richard Forsyth scoring with a deft touch after 7 minutes. The rest of the period and the second remained goalless even though Scotland created a number of chances but didn’t manage to convert. The second half saw Oman equalise almost immediately after the restart with a penalty stroke converted at 33mins. As the game wore on Scotland went through a good spell of creating but not managing to make it count in terms of goals. A number of chances from open play and penalty corners went begging but through Colin Moulding Scotland gained a second. The Scots managed to control a lot of the remainder of the game but the score remained and picked up Scotland’s first three points.
Scotland then lost 1-0 to Germany but were frustrating not to have come away with something from the game again. Germany scored in the first period from a penalty stroke. Scotland tried to pull them back and get level but whilst they came close on a number of occasions they did not manage to find the net. As the game came towards the end Scotland pulled the goalkeeper off to play a kicking back but the score remained 1-0 to Germany as the final whistle blew. At times Scotland showed that they are capable of competing with the top nations here but unfortunately did not make the quarter finals.
Scotland then played off for 9th -12th place with Ireland, New Zealand and Italy. Scotland played Ireland first and lost 2-0 today. Scotland created chances but were unable to capitalise on these then ireland got two goals in the fourth quarter to take the three points in this encounter.
Scotland then lost 2-1 against New Zealand. They were 1-0 up at half time but a crazy few minutes at the start of the last quarter saw Scotland lose 2-1. Owen Hadden was Scotland’s scorer with a field goal.
It was an 8-0 win for Scotland to finish off the tournament in style with a reward from all the efforts throughout. First half field goals from Doug Nicol, Neil Mitchinson and two for Owen Hadden saw Scotland go in 4-0 at the half time break. The second half saw Ross McPherson get on the score sheet, Doug Nicol grabbing another and Graham Dunlop adding two, one from a penalty corner and one in open play. A good finish to the tournament that saw Scotland finish 11th.
