ESM men celebrate history making success
After being promoted from Scottish Hockey’s third tier, as it was pre the pandemic, ESM men’s first team is now looking forward to continuing their journey and making club history when they make their debut in the country’s top division this coming autumn after an incredibly successful run on the pitch this season.
The foundations for this success have been built over the last ten years with an excellent youth set up now providing players for all levels of the club; a strong family and team-based culture beginning to embed itself both on and off the pitch and more latterly the building of top-class water based pitch which has allowed the team to develop an exciting brand of attacking hockey.
The core group of players in this year’s first team have really driven the behaviours and standards required to take the squad forward to the next level. This coupled with the arrival of new players and supplemented with the constant conveyor belt of exciting talent coming from the junior section has meant that the standard and quality at training twice a week has been first class. This level of performance then transferred itself to how the team played on Saturday afternoons across season culminating in consistent high quality performances week on week.
The ESM squad now look forward to welcoming the cream of Scottish men’s hockey to East Fettes Avenue next season and continuing their collective journey together.
Coach Andrew Brogdon said:
‘From day one of pre-season the squad has worked incredibly hard to achieve their aim of promotion to Scottish Hockey’s top division. Over 25 players have played their part across the season but it’s those men who’ve been with the squad over a number of years and who have helped re-shape the positive team environment amongst the squad, from the new beginnings 4 years ago, that I was most pleased for when they collected their medals last Saturday’
‘The support I’ve had from the club, in particular Club Captain Graeme Pearson, has been invaluable these last few years without whom we wouldn’t be where we are today. Latterly bringing on board Stevie McCurry’s coaching experience has meant we’ve really begun to professionalise what we do both on and off the pitch. Huge thanks to him and also Ailsa Maguire for all her help in getting the team in good physical shape at the start of the season’
‘We are now really looking forward to continuing our journey in the premiership next season. In particular I’m excited to see our talented young players experience top level hockey for the first time; I’m sure they and rest of the squad can’t wait for the first premiership league game to arrive’
