Edinburgh University women’s 2XI celebrate league success

With a successful season behind them, Edinburgh University women’s 2XI approached their final league match aiming for an unbeaten season and a goal difference of 100 goals overall. A tough match against Watsonians 2s, left the university side with a challenge to score 6 goals in their final match of the season.

Within the opening quarter against Glasgow University 2s both teams were equally matched with Glasgow applying pressure whilst Edinburgh settled into the match. The opening goal was made by Julia Hill in the 2nd quarter who performed a textbook deflection from the back post, putting Edinburgh 1-0 ahead. With 5 goals left to reach their goal Edinburgh University came into the 3rd quarter holding much of the possession. Amy Rumney showed an excellent performance in attack, calmly leading the keeper out and playing the ball into an open goal to secure Edinburgh’s 2nd goal of the match, swiftly followed by another strike from open play. With Edinburgh dominating the game it was a clean shot from Romey Abu-Rajab that brought the quarter to a close with the score sitting at 4-0.

Entering the 4th quarter Glasgow made some promising breaks towards the D, but keeper Kat Carr created excellent pressure at the top of the D, ensuring Edinburgh walked away with a clean sheet. A pass from Captain, Rachel Shiel was deflected into the goal by Gabby House bringing Edinburgh’s goal difference of 100 into sight.

With 6 minutes left the pressure was on for Edinburgh who created a well-structured attack against Glasgow. It was Rumney who secured a hattrick and the 105th goal of the season for Edinburgh University 2s, leaving them on a goal difference of 100 with 3 minutes to go. However, with minutes left on the clock Edinburgh proved their dominance in the league with House scoring the 7th and final goal of the season.

Edinburgh University 2XI had a record-breaking season; securing their league win with 4 games in hand and winning all 20 games in the league, making them the only team to do so across all Scottish Hockey national leagues. With an impressive score line of 105 goals throughout the season, Edinburgh University 2s also topped the national league statistics maintaining a clean sheet from November only conceding 4 goals throughout the season. From the outset of the season the Edinburgh University 2XI have pushed themselves to set multiple team records and show their promise as high-performance players.

Season Review:

From the outset, EUWHC 2XI had an objective to go unbeaten for the 21/22 season and to finish with a generous goal difference. As a university team who bid farewell to those at the end of their degree and welcome in new players, the team started the season extremely strong. The team trained hard and by the first half of the season, had maintained their goal to go undefeated. The team continued their winning strike, and with 4 games to go had won the league. The focus now became to achieve a 100-goal difference, with players motivated to reach 17 goals across the remaining 4 games. A tough game against Watsonians 2s, meant that the team needed to score 12 goals across 2 games. With a lot of determination and focus, EUWHC 2s not only nailed a 6-0 victory in their second last game, but they also went on to score 7 goals in their last match of the season, surpassing their season aims and finishing the season unbeaten and with a 101-goal difference. The commitment from the teams’ older players and our new players was instrumental for the success of the season, and the hard work put in being rewarded. The team have competed in the Scottish Plate, defeating GHK 2s in the quarter finals and Glasgow University 2s in the semis, and look forward to Sunday 15th May, where they will face Cala in the final. The team continue to train hard and are determined to achieve their final aim for the 21/22 season; to win the Scottish Plate.

Coaches Mhairi McGregor (Uddingston HC) and Katherine McKinley (Watsonians HC) spoke of the team’s success throughout the season stating, “from the outset our aim was to push the girls and elevate their training to a higher performance level. We wanted to see a lot of personal development as well as continuing to develop as a squad. As we welcomed new players to the squad, it was great to see our senior players take on leadership roles. Looking to next season we plan to continue setting record-breaking goals to keep the team motivated within the league.”
