Edinburgh University women open with a win at the Euros in Turkey
EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY 1-0 SWANSEA (WALES)
Edinburgh University women started off their campaign at the EuroHockey Club Trophy 11 competition in Alanya with a 1-0 win over Welsh side Swansea in their opening pool match.
It is psychologically important to begin the cut-throat four team pool format with a win on the opening day.
The Edinburgh students lie second in the pool after the first day, they trail Ireland`s UCD on goal difference after they recorded a comfortable 4-0 win over Rakovnik from the Czech Republic in an earlier game.
Edinburgh coach Sam Judge said: “We created a lot of chances, especially in the second half but their keeper played very well. We dominated possession, won a lot of the ball high up the pitch, but just couldn`t convert.
“We need to improve our execution of penalty corners, everybody`s role. But we moved the ball well and they didn`t have any chances. It was a controlled performance.”
The only goal of the game came from the stick of Ava Smith from open play towards the end of the first quarter. There were no further goals in the game and keeper Katie Binsted was able to keep a clean sheet. The last quarter became a little tense as Smith and Harriet Bradley were sent to the sin bin.
Next Edinburgh are up against Rakovnik and a second win here is likely to set up a winner take all clash with UCD for a place in the final, promotion and some vital EHL ranking points.
