Edinburgh University wins Men’s Scottish Cup in sensational finals day

Men’s Scottish Cup Final | Hillhead 1-3 Edinburgh University

Edinburgh University won the Men’s Scottish Cup Final with a 3-1 win over Hillhead at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

Edinburgh University started strong and enjoyed good possession, though Hillhead’s counter attack looked a threat.

Halfway through the opening quarter and Kyle Flockhart sent a dangerous pass across the face of goal, but it evaded all attacking sticks and zipped clear.

A sensational drag flick by Johnny Bradley crashed against the left post and bounced clear as the students came close to the opener.

Murray Ross came close for Hillhead when he popped up at the far post looking to slam dunk the ball into the net, but it went over the bar.

Edinburgh University then took the lead. Iain McFadden slammed a low drag flick into the bottom left corner for 1-0.

Hillhead forced their way back into the contest and almost equalised through a Callum Duke drag flick that looked destined for the bottom left.

Edinburgh University doubled their advantage from the penalty spot after half time. Keir Robb stepped up to strike and found the net for 2-0.

The victory looked sealed late in the final quarter when Alex Wilson sunk a drag flick into the bottom right corner for 3-0.

Hillhead kept fighting and quickly pulled one back when Ewan Campbell fired home from a penalty corner for 3-1 to prompt a late fightback but there would be no further goals and the students were victorious.

 

 

Men’s Reserve Cup Final | Watsonians 3s 4-1 Watsonians 4s

An excellent 4-1 victory saw Watsonians 3s defeat Watsonians 4s in the Men’s Reserve Cup at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

It was a tactical affair from two teams who know each other well, with the game beginning at a fast tempo. The 4s were defending well and created the better chances on the counter attack.

As half time approached the 3s pressure paid off and Noah Gray found the net from close range from a rebound off the goalkeeper. 1-0.

A second goal came for the 3s right on the hooter with a scooped close range effort into the roof of the net for 2-0. It was a killer blow for the 4s as they tried to hold on until the break.

It went to 3-0 right after half time when Harry Yarr crashed the ball home on the reverse.

It went to 4-0 in the final quarter from an excellent finish by Yarr from a tight angle.

James Sanderson pulled one back for the 4s with an opportunistic finish to make it 4-1, and complete the scoring.

 

Men’s Reserve Plate Final | Inverleith 3s 0-4 Clydesdale 3s

A 4-0 victory for Clydesdale 3s saw them defeat Inverleith 3s in the Men’s Reserve Plate Final in Glasgow.

Clydesdale 3s got off to a great start when Lloyd Neil Morton’s deflection from a well worked penalty corner, found the bottom right corner for 1-0.

Clydesdale dominated the early play but Inverleith began to assert themselves on the game and came close with two penalty corners.

Abraham Horler popped home a far post finish after the ball found its way through a ruck of players, for the finish into the empty net. 2-0.

The goals kept coming and a close range finish at the near post made it 3-0 for Clydesdale.

Finally, Michael Cockburn slammed home a fourth for Clydesdale 3s after a lovely turn and low drive into the bottom left corner. 4-0 and a great win for the Glasgow side.

 

Men’s District Cup Final | Hillhead 2s 3-3 (6-7) Watsonians 2s

An exceptional Men’s District Cup Final went to a shootout and Watsonians 2s won 7-6 over Hillhead 2s after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

It was a fast and frantic opening to the match with some feisty challenges. The opener came soon enough and it went to the Glasgow side. Andrew Hilton gave Hillhead the lead from the penalty spot with a well-executed stroke into the bottom corner for 1-0 early in the contest.

Early in the second quarter Hillhead doubled their lead with a lovely finish by Grant MacMillan. From a penalty corner, MacMillan patiently waited for the ball to fall to him before flicking it into the top left corner for 2-0.

Hillhead racked up the penalty corners as half time approached with MacMillan causing lots of problems, but Watsonians 2s survived until the break without any further losses.

After half time Watsonians began to play their way back into the contest and caused problems.

The Watsonians pressure paid off when Ben Connolly swept the ball home from a patient penalty corner build up to make it 2-1.

The Hillhead two-goal cushion was restored when Murray McVicar squeezed the ball home from close range to make it 3-1.

Still, Watsonians kept coming, and they pulled another one back through Connolly from the penalty spot to make it 3-2.

Moments later and another penalty stroke to Watsonians. Martin Cunnane dispatched the ball into the roof of the net for 3-3.

A thrilling end couldn’t find a winner and the final went to a shootout, and after sudden death it was Watsonians 2s who won 7-6 to lift the cup.

 

 

Men’s Scottish Plate Final – Inverleith 3-2 Dundee Wanderers

A late winner by Charlie Jack gave Inverleith a 3-2 victory over Dundee Wanderers ti win the men’s Scottish Plate in Glasgow.

A great last-gasp diving save by Connor Downs denied Inverleith an opening goal in the first few seconds of the game.

The Edinburgh sides started well and was rewarded with the opening goal. Hamish Norval burst into the circle and picked out Ben Turtle to deflect home for 1-0.

Bobby Ralph equalised for Wanderers from a penalty corner. A lovely drag flick into the bottom right corner equalised to make it 1-1.

As half time approached Inverleith went back in front. From a penalty corner routine Charlie Jack took the roof off the net to make it 2-1.

Wanderers bagged a second equaliser and it was Ralph again who swept home a penalty corner rebound into the net for 2-2.

Then, Inverleith took the lead for a third time. Jack crashed home a low drag flick through the legs of the goalkeeper with five minutes remaining. 3-2 and victory for Inverleith.

 

Men’s District Plate Final | Inverleith 2 3-2 Granite City Wanderers 2

Inverleith 2s won the Men’s District Plate Final with a 3-2 victory over Granite City Wanderers at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

The game was two minutes old when Angus Comerford struck to give his side a lightning start to the contest and go 1-0 ahead.

Granite City Wanderers battled back however and at the end of the first quarter they found the net through Stuart Coezter to make it 1-1.

It was a tight contest and Inverleith edged ahead for the second time in the 50th minute when Rory MacDougal struck to make it 2-1.

The team from Aberdeen wouldn’t lay down, and seven minutes later John Graham found the net to equalise for a second time.

The eventual winner went to Inverleith and it was Andrew Dane who found the net to win the match with a 3-1 victory.
