Edinburgh HC and Hillhead win U14 Cups

After an exciting day of youth hockey, Edinburgh HC girls and Hillhead boys have won this season’s U14 National Club Cups.

Four girls’ and four boys’ teams from eight different clubs qualified for the finals on Sunday 2 June at Glasgow National Hockey Centre. The winners of the semi-finals met in the finals, with the losers playing for 3rd/4th places.

U14 Girls Cup Finals

Grange opened the day with a 3-1 win against Clydesdale Western. Two penalty corners from Lucy Pilinger gave Grange a 2-0 half-time lead. Holly Halpin made it three in the third quarter before a great finish from Alyssa Lavelle gave the Glasgow girls a consolation goal.

In the other semi-final, Edinburgh HC (EHC) made a lightning-quick start against Perthshire, going 3-0 up in the first quarter with goals from Amy McDougall (2) and Ellie O’Connor. It stayed that way until the half-hour mark, but a further five goals in the second-half gave Edinburgh an 8-0 win. Julia Muyo de Bonrostro, Amelie Mallinson and Emily Macpherson all got on the scoresheet; MacDougall completed her hattrick; and O’Connor scored her second.

Clydesdale Western finished in 3rd place with a 3-0 win against Perthshire on Pitch 2. Two minutes into the second half, April Macaulay scored a penalty corner, with Erin Thomas adding a second a minute later before Caitlin Thomas grabbed a third in the last minute.

In a thrilling final, Amelie Mallison scored after 21 minutes, before Ellie O’Connor’s penalty corner gave EHC a 2-0 half-time lead. Mallinson added her second in the third quarter, finishing a well-worked move. Lucy Pilinger grabbed a consolation goal for Grange, scoring her third penalty corner of the day. Well done to EHC coaches Janice Hudson-Windsor and Billy Fouflias, and their talented young team.

U14 Boys Cup Finals

An excellent team performance by Hillhead boys gave them a well-deserved 4-2 win against Watsonians in a thrilling semi-final. Ben Maclean gave the maroons an early lead, before Sam Brett equalised before half-time. Ruari Macaulay and captain Amar Sagoo made it 3-1 for Hillhead in the third quarter, before Jacob Leiper’s penalty corner made it 3-2. However, Sagoo wrapped up the win for Hillhead with a late penalty corner.

The second semi-final was a feisty match between Inverleith and ESM. Noah Cottam gave Inverleith the lead after just 2 minutes before captain Moss Taylor Ladas equalised in the second quarter. Louis Duncan scored the winner for Inverleith just before half-time, but they had to hang on with only eight players on the pitch at the end of the game. The purples received a total of four green cards in the second half, before Louis Duncan and Angus McLean both earned yellow cards as their team lost their discipline.

Watsonians finished third with a 3-1 win against ESM. Alistair Gordon gave ESM an early lead, but Lukas Bell equalised before half-time. The maroons left it late, scoring two goals in the last 3 minutes through Ben Maclean’s penalty corner and Bell grabbing his second goal.

In the final, Noah Cottam gave Inverleith an early lead before Charlie Hamilton scored a superb hattrick for Hillhead in the space of only 12 minutes to make it 3-1 by the end of the third quarter. A penalty stroke from Amar Sagoo and a goal from Ruari Macaulay rounded off a great performance to give their team the trophy and well-earned gold medals.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to an excellent day of youth hockey. Our technical officials Rona MacVicar, Chris Macdonald, Iain Cowe and Rachel Meredith have given superb support to this season’s youth competitions, along with all the umpires, led by Duncan Service. Cameron Watson, Maggie Conacher, Lauren Henderson, Paul Bowyer and Norrie Springford had a busy day umpiring the eight matches between them, and they did an excellent job.

The matches were enjoyed by a large, appreciative crowd who created a great atmosphere at the hockey centre.
