Draw between Scotland women and Ireland in Belfast
Scotland women drew 1-1 with Ireland in Belfast in an entertaining second match of a two game series. Ireland won the opening match but game two saw a much improved Scotland performance, as both sides build towards the EuroHockey Championships this summer.
Scotland came out flying and got off to a great start with an early goal. 45 seconds into the contest saw Katie Robertson beat two players on the left before picking out Eve Pearson in the circle, who converted to give Scotland a 1-0 lead.
From the second quarter the contest was an exciting one with both sides creating good opportunities.
Jess Buchanan made some solid stops in goal for Scotland, and defensively the Tartan Hearts looked composed and solid.
In the final quarter, with six minutes left to play, Ireland found an equaliser. A penalty corner routine was deflected past Buchanan on the right side to make it 1-1.
Immediately Scotland surged forward and won a corner of their own, but the effort didn’t find the net despite the great attitude shown.
There would be no further goals and the game ended in a deserved draw for both sides.
Head Coach Chris Duncan said, “It was a good performance today, night and day from yesterday. We were very controlled, and professional, and it was great to see our defensive identity on show today. It’s also very pleasing to see the problems we caused in attack.
“We tired towards the end and lost the equaliser, and on another day it could have been a win. We stepped up our performance and it puts us in a nice place to build from.”
