Devils and Lightning clash this weekend in new Emerging Talent Academy League
Following the successful second edition of the Academy Series at under 18 level earlier in the month, Scottish Hockey continues to increase opportunities for talented young hockey players to excel with the new Emerging Talent Academy League.
The Emerging Talent Academy League begins this weekend for emerging players at the younger talent stage of under 15/16 age group for boys and girls. Following a number of regional talent days, three regional training groups were identified to train and play in the new competition.
On Sunday at Dalnacraig, in the boys’ league, the Dundee Devils emerging academy will take on Edinburgh Lightning, while at Peffermill Edinburgh Lightning will host the Dundee Devils in the girls’ competition.
The new league format will see fixtures taking place over the next couple of months to decide a winner, but more importantly to give the youngsters an opportunity to learn and develop their skills.
A combination of more regular training opportunities with matches spread out over a longer period, also give our national age group coaches an extended opportunity to see players in a strong developmental environment.
This will aid the selection process for future national activity at under 15 and 17 level later in the summer.
National coaches for this stage of the talent pathway, Kelly Fillingham and Alan Wall devised the new format, and Kelly said, “We are thrilled to get our Emerging Talent Academy League and programme up and running, it’s been a lot of hard work behind the scenes to turn what has been a tough period into something meaningful for our young athletes, so it’s a big pat on the back to all involved.
“We have some exceptional potential within our emerging academy squads in Scotland and I’m pleased we will be able to see them in an environment where they can focus on further development, supported by our quality coaching teams. I’m confident this new structure will offer the right balance of training, competition and learning so our emerging stage athletes can thrive, and I’m excited to be able to see their continued development over the next four months.”
